MileS, please don't get me wrong... and even worse, don't put words in my mouth :D! I have never intimated that spearos are worse than Rock & surf fishermen, or that they are the ones to blame...

Spearos are certainly not the only ones to blame for fish stock depletion. The ones to blame are all those fishermen who allow their greed and ego's to get the better of them...

2 wrongs NEVER make a right... when/whether other types of fishermen break the rules or not, doesn't entitle your brand of fishing to break the rules. Whether another brand of fishing plunders the sea or not, does not entitle your brand of fishing to plunder the sea "on a good day".

Your knowledge, experience and awesome skill at being a true fisherman Miles, a truly great fisherman, something that I can only aspire to, stands you in great stead to positively influence many, many lives in securing the future of our great sport... for the sake of your children and for mine... take the opportunity boet...

limit your catch... don't catch your limit...

all valid comments, and weeds, i hear you bru, i hear you. all of you make valid points, but please as spearos don't pull the whole "effort of a wet wetsuit", "in their domain" angle because i surf in these waters bru and if i understand correctly that your dive times are fairly restricted, i spend way longer in "their domain" than any of you, so i'm pretty core too when you think of it!

i think the my flaw was in starting this post when i was ticked off. the gist is that this is a fishing site and i dont believe spearfishing should form a part of it. the methodology employed will always fracture the general mind sets that prevail over that aspect of fishing. there is no useful correlation between fishing and spearfishing. put it this way, what benefit does that video hold for ANGLERS on this site. when you slow that vid down it still looks like a shark. i could argue that despite the fact "grouper" type fish may be shot in Aus, that a true hunter would ignore the shot because it is no challenge. could i? if i had a duiker come up and sniff the barrel of a .22 i wouldn't pull the trigger, even though legally i could, it's the same sort of thing.

either way, these are all minor points in the whole scheme of things so possibly i can put this all straight before doing some darn work. my intention is not to offend or marginalise anybody. as you might have gathered, i am passionate about the ocean, all God's creatures in it and especially about angling albeit that i suck badly at it! i don't see that this vid helps the sport of angling in any way. i do see that it could be damaging though, or not. the crux is that it has no place on this site, there are plenty of spearo sites available that will lap that footage up. if i have offended anyone, i apologise, but as anglers, keeping quiet has never served us well.

oh ja. just one more point. i am consistent in my approach to things. i never buy fish from a supermarket. the only fish i purchase is tuna sashimi and salmon sashimi. the salmon is farmed, the tuna comes from commercials granted, but you will never find hake or the like in my freezer ever!

Guys,

I wish that I had seen the video, then I could pass comment. I know reefman posted some pics from the video unfortunately they don't convey much.
Miles, I think thee doth protest too loud. (I think you are replying from a guilty conscience).
The rape must stop.

Ok here's the link to the video...

The reason we removed it, because it actually advertizes the video for sale... I got no problem with guys making personal videos of their pillage, but then to make money out of it too... eish... you gotta draw the line somewhere..

ego mike, full stop.

possibly i can divert the attention quickly...

isn't it ironic that whenever the various aspects of angling have occassion to point a few fingers at each other, that the trek netter/ commercial angle gets hauled back out again! i completely agree that they have no place in sensible resource management, but i find myself torn between two responses....

1. my efforts will have absolutely no effect when weighed against the devastation that those okes sow, so why bother, take what you want when you want

or

2. Screw it, regardless of the damage they cause, i have to live with my conscience and look my child in the eye in a few years time and be held accountable for the fact that i knew the collapse of all fish stocks was looming and i did nothing about it...so i'll make my effort no matter how insignificant.

only one of these options allows me to sleep at night and be comfortable with myself and my character. spearos have their place in the ocean just like any other water user make no mistake, and yes it is not easy, and yes it is hairy when you have big goggas eyeing you out with blood in the water, and yes shooting your bag limit is legal. but let me ask you all this....

we all rant and rave about the ineffeciency and efficacy of MCM and DEAT. in fact, i am sure that the general consensus would be that kortbroek and his cronies are just plain useless and that none of their plans have worked at all. then why oh why when it comes to bag limits do we suddenly say that MCM etc know what they are talking about and that it is ok to catch your limit. their whole system is flawed including bag limits etc so taking ten yellowtail to my mind, is bullsh*t.

anyway, it is the nature of the mantis to step on a few toes and ruffle a few feathers every now and then, hopefully all in good spirit though. i may be opinionated and vocal, but i can  be wrong and will be the first person to admit it. in this case, i'm glad the vid and it's associated free marketing, was removed.

right now i'm off to go canned lion hunting. he he heheheh  eh ehhe heee

Hiya

There is MUCH that can be learnt from spearo's. How many anglers have stood on the shore and wandered just what EXACTLY is going on under the water? Spearfishing has helped me excel at fishing. It taught me how different fish behave, how to better present my bait, what weather patterns are required for what fish, etc. But, like some-one said, there's not much that can be learnt from a spearfishing video. Remaining ignorant is your perogative.

Mantis, surfing and spearfishing is two total different sports!! You're not hunting in the water, dragging bleeding fish on a floatline. You're not entering the food-chain. Its a bit silly comparing surfing to spearing.

What really bugs me is the elitist attitude that anglers have. Their way of doing things IS supposedly more sporting and more conservation minded. Furthermore, most people don't even have their facts straight!!  Its always safer to get your facts in order before making a fool of yourself. Come on guys, you should know what a cobia is!! You should know that groupers are found all over the world!

Fishing is about catching fish. I suppose, pretty soon any-one who takes a fish home for the pan will be flamed!! I read some-where on this forum that a angler was too scared to post a picture of a wildeperd becuase he feared the wrath of those who are too conservationly minded.

Lets agree to dis-agree. I will continue to take my legally allotted fish, regardless of what anyone says. Its my RIGHT. If anyone doesn't like that, just too bad!

 Regards

miles

yip, i do know what a corbia is, just got it wrong, and i did originally say i might have gotten it wrong. valid point in terms of learning from spearos, i used to dive the kzn coast quite a bit for crayfish so i completely get what you mean. there is just a touch of acid in the tone of the reply which is cool, must have struck a nerve, which wasn't the intention. just a quick question: how many of the great white attacks recently were on spearos? none. and on surfers...all except two. but like you said ignorance is one's perogative. ok, i'm just revving you now to make light of the situation.

you are right to say catching your limit is your right. it is my right to drive a 5.5litre SUV around town. it is my right to flick a lit cigarette butt out my window onto dry grass. it is my right to wantonly waste water. all these things are my rights, but are not in the interests of the greater good...the things that are more important than my own closeted, self appreciating world. for whatever reasons, i choose rather to sublimate my selfish, unproductive desires and needs.

either way, the whole point of my original post has been lost in all this posturing. the point was i felt that particular video, not all spearo videos, held no benefit for this site and i fail to see how any benefit can be derived from what we saw.
