Southern Cape Area

I have been trying dropshot from Gouritzriver to Glentana but still haven't caught anything. Where is the best place to start and what soft bait to use. I am very keen to learn dropshot and want I have seen on ESA I have tried and it seems that nothing is working out as it should. I apply my rock and surf knowledge of when and where to fish, but it seems that this is maybe the wrong thing to do. Would like to target kob, garrick and grunter. If there is anybody that is a keen dropshotter in the area I would like to organize a outing to learn the ropes.

Only catch and release.

Thanks for the support.

Hi Johan,

I am no expert, but have had a good success rate with camo worm fished in the gullies at Gourits.  The weather was very bad for fishing on my last two holidays to Gourits and I still managed to catch numerous blacktail and wildperd, eventhough I could not get to the spots I would have liked to fish.  I will try for bigger fish when the conditions are more favourable. I do not put any action on the camo worm when I retrieve, I cast it out in a gully and just take up the slack as the waves washes in. I cover as many gullies as possible as I found your first couple of casts will produce the biggest fish or indicate if the gullie does not have fish.

Great reply!

I don't fish that area at all, but can tell you, that is exactly what I do on the North Coast in the gullies at Mission Rocks and even Cape Vidal.:first

Thanks for the tips so far. I do not see people fishing with dropshot, so I would say that there is not a lot of people doing it in our area.

Maybe if you can give me some tips on what to look for then I can try it and let you know if that works.

Rocks, sand beach and rivers.

:thankie

Hi there,

I just did a trip to Reebok and although the Kleinbrak River wasn't playing along, the gullies sure were. I managed couple of really nice fish including a 47cm Yellowbelly Rock cod and this 35cm Blacktail. All the fish were caught on either natural or camo sandworm.

Thanks you for the reply. I suppose the fish were caught on low tide. Haven't been able to go fishing, but I think that this will be a good area to start at. Any technique of retrieval you used that worked well?

Thanks again.
