Hi - I realise this is a little unconventional but we have a fishing ski related querry at  SOAKED.CO.ZA which requires some expert advice from you folks. If someone could help, it would be much appreciated. The thread is : http://soaked.co.za/viewtopic.php?t=418

Hi Gdigitel,

Had a look at the link. Tell Pierre to check out www.stealthpp.co.za or www.macski.co.za.

These are two GREAT fishing ski's and the market leaders (in my opinion). I currently have a macski which is a kilo or two heavier than the Stealth but it is stable and hard as nails. The macski is also a little cheaper. There are great accesories that you can add to both and remember that a good paddle is important.

SOT ski are definitely better for rough conditions and punching through big surf. Also you don't want to be cramped inside when spending a few hours on your ski. The SOT kayaks have great storage compartments for all your gear and extra's that you might want.

Stealth have just launched there new Duo double fishing ski. Has it's benefits (double the power) but you are then unable to use it on your own. The Duo is also more of a pain to transport and store due to the length.

A rudder is a must! It is almost impossible to control it or launch it and beach it through the surf without it. Most the kayaks are over 4 meters and hard enough turn without a rudder.

Good luck and hope you have hours of fun on it.

For me, the decision between going plastic or fibreglass depends on where you intend to use it. If its gonna be for surf launches then you're going to have to go for the locally made fibreglass skis (Stealth, Tomski, etc). All good skis no doubt. Reason being is they are designed for that with their rounder noses. The plastics are ideal for here in the Cape where you can drag them off the rocks and launch anywhere you see birds feeding and fish tucking in. Watched 2 guys with plastics pop in their boats off the rocks at Millers last Sun. No need to use slipways and the like. Plastics tend to have sharper noses and faster to row, but dont do well in surf.
Hope this helps.

If you are going to use it as a fishing craft, fibreglass is in my opinion the only way to go. I have had both and the hatches in themselves should sell the boat to you. They are designed by fisherman for fishing and are not afterthoughts.

Dave - No disrespect intended mate, but I find it hard to believe these are "Afterthoughts" and not designed by fisherman.....

These craft are designed by fisherman, for fisherman, and a million times better made and thought out than anything our local ski manufacturers are putting out there....

BUT, I will agree with you 100%, that for surf launching, and fishing our East coast, they are faaaaaar behind our local fibreglass skis, without a doubt...
