So Matthias and I got up at 8 with howling winds.
We were at the dam by 9, with an unpleasantly cold winds blowing right through our layers of clothes.
We were on the water by 9:20. (Had a lot of stuff to unpack and repack etc.)
We started fishing the wind-blown reeds at one end of the dam, I had a Falcon Cara T7 Amistad in my hand and a punch rig at the end of the line, with a Gambler Ugly Otter in Junebug.
Matthias had a texas senco rigged up.
It was already starting to drizzle even though the sun was up.
I punched deep into the reeds and lilypads for around 15mins with one hit but no takes.
I then pitched the punch rig far into a pocket of reeds and felt a "Thud" on the fall. I wasn't too sure and just put a bit of tension on the line, before I knew it the fish had took off!
I struck him hard and hooked him in the top of his mouth.
We made our way around the dam pitching the reeds and lilies.
We got to some trees and Matthias switched to BS fishing jig paired up with his new Adrenalin rod. He made a good cast towards the tree and started a slow retrieve. I then saw his rod double over and we argued as follows:
Me: Dude c'mon stop playin' around you're just stuck.
Matthias: I swear there's a fish on here!
Me: Ag you've just mistaken it for a tree as usual.
Next thing I know this big fish flares it's gills as it comes to break the surface!
I watched him fight it until he brought it to his tube and...out flies the jig.
Eish...this fish was bigger than the ones we were still to catch. This fish was definitely close to 2kgs!
Oh well...He learnt his lesson. Next time you're not sure if you're stuck or not. STRIKE!
So I continued working the reeds and Matthias went further down the dam disappointed with his loss. Next thing I heard a shout coming from across the dam and check him net a nice size fish. Then the roars of triumph was to follow
After the photo I whipped out the punch rig once again. The rain was also catching up with us. I pitched a point of reeds and never felt the bottom. I reeled like mad and gave a good heave of the rod.
I immediately felt resistance and powered this fish over the lilies into open water.
It nearly pulled my rod out of my hands as my drag was bloody tight!(It's needed to get a good hookset in the thick stuff)
I adjusted the drag, played the fish, and brought him to the net.
I grabbed him and yelled my lungs out
Haven't caught a fish like that in a looong time!
This beaut tipped the scale at 1.83kgs!
The wind was pumping so I switched to a timber tiger and made a long cast over some laydowns. The Chronarch D5 sure does cast cranks really far!
I felt the crank come over a limb and felt tension.
I kept the tension and reeled in this little guy.
After this it started p*issing with rain! I persevered with my punch rig until I hooked a deep tree. Unfortunately the 30lb braid snapped
Man I love punching! I need to order more of those!
So we called it a day at 12:30.
Had no more confidence without a punch rig in my hands
