So much bait, so little time

On my last trip I planned for every situation possible, I took the following baits along with me:
1.Dove
2.Platties
3.Kariba worms
4.Spring wurms
5.Snails
6.Chicken Heart
7.Carp Head
8.Carp fillet
9. Crickets
10. Fresh water Shrimp
11. Baby platties
I also had a Muddie caught at the site.

On reflection it is impossible to fish all these baits effectively in the time available. The problem is if I only took one or two baits and caught nothing there would be regret after the weekend.

If you had to take 4 baits for "Cats" that would cover all bases what would they be?

I would take anything carpy and a muddie head has sometimes caught me fish after the carp heads have been left out for hours.Platties and chicks are also good and maybe a dove I have been experimenting with a dove bait,I have not been using it that long so can't give a opinion on it.IMO the rest of the baits are way to small for those tld of yours and if you want big barbel use carp baits and try a livie

I'm thinking along the same lines, Carp baits and Doves for the TLD's and another rod for the 5-10kg Cats with platties and other small baits. I am actually considering putting braid on one of my Orlando reels.

Small cats baby chicks and platties will be a good consistent bait.

For larger fisj you will need larger bait. Personally I like to use fish from the dam I'm fishing. Most plentyful bait fish in the dam is where to start. Luckly that's normally carp. But for big cats the best bait has to be fish. I have a lot of confidence in thw whole dove tho

I was thinking more along the lines of 20lb, it will be for the smaller baits, I cast pretty far with these reels and they take allot of line.

I'd still go 30lb hey. I prefer to be safe than sorry. But personal preference. For me 30lb is lite line. But if I pick up something bigger than expected than best have more to offer and out a bit more pressure on the fish

Chicken Liver soaked in a little coarse salt for two days (not longer) to toughen it a little & carp heads when I can get them. I make dough balls with worm soil, dog meal & fish pellets & through a few all round when we arrive & there after follow up with one small one thrown directly after a cast to the same spot.

Tried the blood congealing drying & cutting yesterday. Was problematic right from the first step. Anything plastic in the fridge took on the smell, the drying brought on bluebottom flys within seconds. For me was not worth the effort or discomfort.

Sorry guys for being so quiet latly things are a bit hectic between the work, kids and buying my new house! For me platties are the best bait to trigger the quickest bite but u have to make sure that they are fresh and lively!!! That for me is the best way. Remember even small live carp will work just aswell because barbel rely more on vibration.

ps. Fishing has been hard lately but remember tides do change!! lol...
