Hi guys

I have a mate that is looking at an Rob Allen Scorpia 500. He wants to use it for off the shore spearing around the bricks. Would its be enough gun for the smaller species around the bricks and up to what size fish would it be able to take?

Regards
Eddie

Yes, definitely, too big, are you mad, never, need a 1300, 4 rubbers...

Ask 10 people and you'll get 20 opinions. To give an accurate answer we need to know where he would do most of the diving as we can give an idea of what species he can encounter. But generally for SA conditions that gun is not suitable. If it's 500g Blacktail, yes (but good luck trying to shoot a Blacktail with a 500, not ever going to get close enough)

Basically all he is going to get would be the odd doff Karanteen and really small stuff which wouldn't even be a mouthfull. Those 500 guns are very useful for e.g. Conger eels in caves in 1m vis. In SA, you're never really going to dive in those conditions.

Depending on where your mate will dive I would say a 900-1000 and can get fish like Shad (Elf) and even Garrick when they're around. These require no "skill" in shooting but with Garrick, landing them is where the fun is. Plus in and around the bricks you can swim into a 40kg Kob, Cracker etc. And garaunteed, when he sees his first big fish and gets more experienced, he will upgrade to give greater flexibility and options in good conditions.

Hope that helps.

He will be diving around the Sheffield area near Ballito, but like you say it's would be better to get a 900. Would it be better to get a rail gun or the non rail gun? I will have a chat with him!

In that area I would advise a 1m at the very least. I would recommend a 1.2m as this is versatile enough for both reef and "blue water" gamefish. If he feels like splashing out a bit, 2 guns, a 1m and a 1.3m. I would also recommend a railgun. The accuracy is unparalleled.

That area is generally clean and gamefish are prolific. Just behind backline you can get Snoek, Couta, Garrick even Wahoo on teh odd occasion. As I said, gamefish tend to be pretty suicidal as they don't generally worry about being hunted.
I would also advise getting hold of the Salt Rock divers. THey have a club up there and alot of the guys do mainly shore dives. Your mate could get valuable experience and shown where the good spots are to do drifts.
You can get hold of the through Chris Coates (Coatsman) through the USM site.
