Slide baiting in DEEP water

Do any of you guys slide bait from a boat in deep water say between 20 - 60 metres.

Would i need a heavier weight on the clip to slowly slide the bait down. My intention is so slap on a juicy whole fillet of fish and have it slowly slide down the line presenting itself to anything thats swim beside seals of course. Would i be best throw out my lead a good distance so as to lessen the angle of the slide or just drop it vertically?I can't wait to give this a shot :bflip

Slide Baits werent made for boating it was made for shore angling in orderto get distance with a cast and then to slide a big bait down to the weight.

what happens is the weight is secured or fixed and then the slide bait is slide down

on boat that is going to be diffcult in that the weight is going to move about

why would'nt you just bomb the bait straight down with the sinker if you were fishing off a boat; unless i'm missing the point.

Hey lads,

I'm wanting the bait to slowly drift down the water so as to alter the species caught i.e. almost fishing all depths. If nothing takes it as it slowly drifts down it will sit at the bottom until something does.

From anchored up boat fishing in 40m we use a very heavy sinkers so the line shouldn't move to much and hopefully the bait will slowly slide down nicelly with a bit work with the rod? Please correct me if I'm wrong or you think it will not work too well?

Milt, when fishing off a boat and trying to fish the entire water column, the best method is quite simple, a drift bait. All that you do is cast out a bait, say a pillie/pilchard, with no sinker attached and let it gently sink. If there is a very slight current, flip the bait INTO the current, so that by the time it passes the boat, it will have sank down already. Alternatively, in heavier currents, use a small ball sinker and also throw it into the current.

Snoek, similar to your baracuda is caught this way. Boats fishing with drift lines, catching fish that 20-30m deep in 40-60m+deep water.

Hi Milt

Hope this will help. We usually use a 4 to 8 ounce (lead) sinker sometimes heavier depending on the current. Attach the sinker with a elastic band. Cut the band and attach the one end to the sinker and the other end to the line +/- 4 meters from the bait or behind the leader, we use the same knot as with your shoelaces which makes removing the sinker easier at the boat when you have a fish on. What is nice about this is that you can adjust your depth of fishing by letting line out to adjust your depth thus covering the whole depth of water and also have a nice bait presentation, this works for live baits also although live baits will head for the bottom in any case once overboard but with slow trolling life baits you can adjust your depth by adding a sinker with this method. On the other side why not try your idea out there's nothing to loose and let us know how it worked. I would just try to get an angle on the line to allow the current to help your bait to slide down the line or else you might get a loop midway down. Good luck.

Yes i like the idea and will give your method a shot as I think its probably better suited than slide baiting at that depth. Miles again thanks for your input as well.
