Size hook lines?

Question what hook line should be used. I have always used a 7lb hookline and were planning a trip to Bloemhof where we have been told that the area were fishing wont have to cast far so our main line can me a bit stronger (I normally fish with 5lb, but for this trip think 7 or 10lb)How for the question a fellow fishermen said he would be upgrading the hook line to 9lb, but why would this make a difference. I agree on the barbell traces I would go stronger but for our standard hook traces is it a good idea to upgrade. My understanding is that the reason for a thinner hookline is to "hide" the trace, if that is true surely a thinner hookline is better everywhere? Any advice is greatly appreciated

7lb is quite weak. There's not much of a difference in diameter between 7 and 9lb, just a 0.03 mm difference but the strength is quite different. A 1 kilogram worth of a difference. I doubt switching to 9lb black carp line on your hooklink would affect the appearance of your trace but on the other hand using 9lb, especially at a speed fishing venue like bloemhof would probably allow you to catch more fish on a single trace (lasts longer) and wouldn't weaken as quickly with the runs coming thick and fast. Just a confidence thing aswell with the bit of extra strength on your hooklink. Hope this helps. Cheers.::tight:

Bloemhof has monster carp, but I wont change my hooklinks. Are you fishing competitively or just social? If you stick to your 7lb line I would just say to take your time playing the fish. I have always fished with 7lb hooklinks and wont change unless I target barble.

Thanks guys I will be fishing competitively so 9lb might be better as you and force the fish a little more but I like and have always fished 7lb. So my plan forward to to fish the 65 or so traces I have already made with 7lb and the new traces I am still busy making I will do with 9lb. That way If I see the 7lb is not working or I need to force fish over snags I will change to 9lb. What you think?

I would assume you are going to the ladies SA's

Keep using your current tackle and don't be fooled by fishing close to do well. Small fish are close so you need natural appearing bait.

Decent point scoring fish are deeper.

My son in the following thread fished with standard 0.8 hooks and 0.20mm hookline and weight 40kg+ fish a day 7 days in a row.
