Sails at Milli

So recently me and the old man went for a short fishing trip to milli. well the fishing was good as always.The thing that is most scary is that we only caught one juvenile Couta. as for the rest it was epic. Dorado,Bludger,yellowspot king,Kakaap and lots of yellowfin tuna (not big ones). the surprise of the trip was that during 4 days we had six confirmed sailfish strikes and managed to land only two. Ja ja I know newbies Ha ha ha. attached is a pic of mine from the Tub.

Most fish had been safely released including the two sailfish. what a great feeling.

So good to see that there is still some good fishing to be had at Mili!Are the local parksboard still such a bunch of surly gits who act as if they are doing us South Africans such a big favour by having us in their country?Also,is the campsite still with one longdrop and a well to get ones cleaning water?

Hi TAM yes its same old same old longdrop. the well have been fitted with with solar pumps and a watertank so most water you can get from a tap at the main beach entrance.

As for Maritime I think that is a pretty unfair statement. I have been fishing there for eight years and have never had any problems. follow the rules. make sure you know the rules and if unsure ask. if you break it they will handle you like that. they have a job to do and they do it. Working in Moz for almost 10 years now and things work a bit differently than in S.A. Once you get over that and the way they do things they are actually a very good crowd.

The sad part is that there is a big planned development for milli. when it will happen I'm not sure at the moment. but as I understand it will basically close it up for us normal fisherman( the roughing it camping wildlife concerned ones)
That is part of the place I like most. very little spots left in southern Africa where you can still camp next to the ocean safely wild and untamed.

Hi Malboer,

It is sad that Mili is up for a development as it is still truly one of the last frontiers that is still wild and without too much traffic.I was last there in 2013.The maritimos took my money for fishing licenses etc and promised me an invoice which I never received,so probably pocketed the money,amongst other things.Anyway,I think Mili is worth another visit.I normally go to Natal North coast,but boating/fishing pressure there is hectic,all the time.I would not say the place is fished out,but as mentioned,always under heavy pressure.I would like to go back to mili,before it becomes developed.Do you know of some good spots there,or do you fish blind?Also,do you venture far from your launch spot?Is it allowed to bring fish back into RSA,can one get permits there?

My Gps clocked out so now I just fish visual as I know the spot pretty well.A fish finder should put you on the spots as you just need to look at the depths and should get your fish. 18 to 25m North and south of the point. I do have a coule of deepwater marks but they will be difficult to find without gps.(good excuse to spend a lot of time on the water) there is a lot of scattered reef in the 35 to 40m range.

You are allowed 5kg of filleted fish per person I bellive. Not sure as I do not have to take fish out the border to take home. You can get permits for it at maritime.

As for not getting your licence. (sure they might have put the money in their pocket) Remember these guys have got almost no support and is dropped at milli every sunday. and change shift every sunday. so if the book runs out. during their shift there is no way of getting a new one before shift change. if you leave before that time you will leave without it. The luck is you paid for it and they wont let you get into trouble if you paid. I have fished Barra for a week with a handwritten note as licence and launching permit Ha Ha ha
