Hi there guys did anyone ever go bass hunting at rietvlei? I wanna go but dont know if it will be a complete waste of time.

Regards

Yes, will be worth going, but only bank angling allowed.

Best bet would be to go on a weekday, otherwise you'll have to do quite a lot of walking trying to find suitable spots to cast, without crossing lines with the carp anglers.

Also maybe wait till the weather warms up a bit.

Here's a report from last year December.

The Bass Angler magazine also did an article on Rietvlei a couple of months back.

Hi all, I am planning on taking my 11 year old bassing off the bank this week. Would it be better to try Reitvlei or Struben?

Both dams are quite tough to fish under the best conditions.

If I had to choose I'd go for Rietvlei, but be prepared to do a lot of walking to find the best spots. If you put in the hours, you will be rewarded with some of the strongest fighting and broad-bodied bass around.

Struben I've only been to once, only caught a couple of small ones and the fish are very skittish as this is a highly pressured dam.

Cheers

Do your son a favour and take him to the artlure junior fishing event at Oppikoppi Bass Farm near Brits this Saturday, 7 Sept.
There are seniors who teach the juniors how to fish with artificial lures. You can then decide whether you want to enter a club. Four events a season. PM me if you are interested. :ifishin

Im also curious as to how the fishing at rietvlei is. Ive heard people say that its good and ive seen some members here with some good fish from there. Id only be able to go on a friday tho, hopefully there wont be many carp anglers early on a friday morning.

Catches have been good this year, the water level has receded but the fish just carry on with their spawn pattern. The biggest that I know of is a 2.4 kg, but something bigger could have come out in the mean time. Will visit vlei or plaat tomorrow, if the weather picks up.:ifishin

A mate of mine fished there on Sunday with 11 Bass biggest 2.1kg all C&R

We were there on Wednesday evening 14 Bass 12 of 0.8-1.2kg and 2 of 2.2kg+ all from the bank and all C&R

Watch out for the Hippos if you do go wading, Kirk got a really big skrik there about a month and a half ago

sounds good sofar! 14 bass for a evening session aint too bad:) Do i just look for bass-looking spots? thinking of going this friday morning.. Went fishing in bronkies yesterday, it was cold, like seriously cold, took me some time to get into a coupla fish but it was worth it. I wade a lot, almost saw my G@t yesterday though lol, but if i had to see a hippo, id walk on water so efficiently it would look like i got two 150 hp outboards strapped to my feet::rm

Ok so i went to rietvlei this past Friday morning for about 4 hours and actually caught two bass! Nothing big, 800g-1kg but at least something. I will be going there again this weekend tho as its real close. Couldn’t fish the whole place though as there was some sort of competition going on.

I met another angler there that told me the woman at the gate told him to keep the bass he catches as they want to get rid of them. Hope people dont do this though.

The dam is real dirty, alot of mielie bomb holders and carp line in the water, and shoes, and a cd, half a reel and a spool. Sad that people pollute such a beautiful dam.

I was quite paranoid wading tho, crocks and hippos freak me a bit, but after the first bass this paranoia left me. But i dont know the dam to well so im not sure where these hippos and crocs hang out.
