Second hand or new? Can advise on new stuff as mates have gone through new tackle in the last season and seen what they enjoy and whats good value and what survived fishing... You maybe have to spend a little more and then still get line but you can get some really nice budget tackle these days.
Rods, look at rovex graphite shad, the sensation shad pro's and the blue marlin spinning sticks like the raptor. Reels look at penn alliance/performer/fierce 6000 (upgrade the drag of fierce to carbon), the finnor spinners like biscayne and lethal 60 (my pick of all these by far) or the shimano alivio 8000 size or similar but not freshwater reel. These above rods and reels have all taken nice yellowtail/cracker/leervis by my mates while fishing for shad in transkei and haven't exploded on them yet so theres my vote.. You could get by on R1500 with good mono line for a decent, even very nice, new tackle for shad.. My pick would be a blue marlin rod and lethal reel. I've had a throw or two with all these and I'd trade my tackle for that particular setup anyday. Lovely blank, high quality components and very good finishing, and the lethal 60 is just an excellent value and great feeling and strong reel and balances well on that setup.
