Re-using baited rig

Hey guys/gals

Lets say I have a well presented chokka bait or a fresh occie leg on my hook, but need to pack up or end my session. Can I put it back into the freezer 'as is' or not, to be used again? Will this weaken my hook snoot or my swivel?

Your input will be much appreciated.

i have done this before but it has only worked once. thawing, freezing it looses scent and juices and then letting it lay and wait for a pick up you might be throwing scentless chunk of protein. so it depends on "how long" it has been in the water.

it has worked once before off the kayak.

Makes sense. Would you reckon it can work with freshly acquired bait, prepared and then frozen?

I know of some guys that will pre-bait some hook snoods for the times the elf are "dik". Then its clip off and clip on as the fish are landed.

I caught my pb Steenbra with a bloodworm that I had to cut off, hook and all cos I got an emergency call while fishing. Wrapped it in some wet newspaper and then into the freezer. Next day, attached it and sent it into the deep blue. Within minutes it was "found" by my pb. :)

Same thing happened when I slid a 'tail head. Also had to make haste to get home. Put that head, slide and all into the freezer. Next day, slid it again. It was in the water for three(3) hours before a bronzie picked it up.

I don't think all baits can be re-sed like that though.

@ Joker - Cool man. Twice experimented and twice successful.

So can I take it then that the feezing does not weaken your line, hook or swivel?

Has worked for me on more than one occasion with Shark slide baits

you can always bind a new cutlet of sliver of chokka onto it to spruice up the flavour and juices a bit.

I had a huge mullet head on slide, after an hour took it out tossed it into the freezer. The next day I tied two sardine belles on to it and an hour later a 206 cm raggie.

Thanks for your input guys. Really appreciate it.

Wrt to the slides being used more than ones... you guys use steel wire, I presume. My concern/worry is that if you use nylon and put in the freezer, would it be safe/wise(strength of nylon) to use it again?

a mate has did this and prepacked his baits... that day the fish did not want to bite!

he went home with thawed prepacked units... he suggested "what a waste of effort"

i suppose prepacked can work if you can prep them quickly in a semi frozen state and not have too much thawing. add some fresh slither as suggested... this will save allot of time especially when the shoal feeds.

one small tip.

i always have cut the next piece of bait while my bait is in the water, that way i save time and i can just put on the "waiting" ready cut bait.

Yip.We do have some time to kill, most of the time, when waiting for some action. With the better days coming along (suppose to... some strange weather we having of late), the kids are bugging me to go with when ever Im planning or hinting to wet a line. With the two of them with me.... geewizz, I normally have my hands full, Lol. Then there's no 'time to kill', hence the question.... Still love to take them with. Teaches them to interact and appreciate nature. Daai klong(7) is already kicking my behind with catching those maasbankers when we in Hermanus.
