RATE THE BAIT

:shark With the majority of us being new to the Dropshot scene and with artificial baits being quite pricy, I thought that it might be an idea for some of us to rate the better products in comparison to others and also what species we caught, so that those that might be targetting a specific species might have a bit more confidence when he goes out to by something.

Unfortunately I have also just started the dropshot scene and my success on this form of fishing is low.

So far it will look like the following:

Berkley  Worm (Bloodworm) - Cob

Berkley Worm (New Penny) - Blacktail

Berkley Worm (New Penny) - White Steenbras

Jerkshads and Minnows, no success yet :cry1

Ya this is a tough one hey.

Mine Looks like this:

Berkly Camo Worm - Blacktail and Silvies

No luck on sensation 3,5" minow or berkly 1.5" minow or blood worm and some other sand worm. Think i need to do this dropshot thing more often hey...

I have the following news.
Pearl 4' jerkshad gets taken by "carel groet oogs" but you seldom catch even on 1/8 jighead because they seem to rip the tail off and thats it. used 2 packets on the weekend and caught 1 of these little beauties!

Now reading that let me throw a stone into the bush and perhaps this can help, we in the fresh call that "hulle byt kort" translated "they're biting short" :lol:1, so here's what we do freshy style and perhaps it could be adapted somewhat to fit the salt style. There's one of two things that we do and here they are:

1. We attach a trailer hook, a hook that slips over the bend of the main hook.

2. We rig the main hook further towards the rear.

Only problem with the rigging the hook further back is that, it takes away some of the action of the lure, which might end up getting less strike but when it does get striked you're bound to have a hookset.

Perhaps somebody can try this and report back on the feasability of this freshy technique?

I used this technique when I used to target Shad because I never used a steel trace.:sha

tried it and it worked well, less strikes as you predicted, but was hooked 70% of the time! many thanks!
what do you guys do with the worms? eg do you jig them or just cast them in and leave them as bait?

I wont say I leave mine, but I dont jig it, I let it wash and just keep taking up the slack.

Sounds right, guys.

Now has anyone gone out and casted some bass lures i.e. 4" deadringers, 6" Lizards or even 6" brushogs into the salt?  If so, what colours worked and how well did you's do with these bass lures?

I intend on on grabing a couple of me Bass-lure (soft plastics) boxes with some Flukes, Speed Craws, Grubs, Deadringers and the likes to go try in the salt in Dec.

Another thing i thought of last night, lying in bed waiting for the Dec holiday to get here, has anyone tried the Carolina and Texas rigs for saltwater dropshotting?  With bass hooks like the EWG 2/0 Gammie's, or the straight shank worm hooks?

I suspect a Texas rigged Zoom fluke on a 2/0 EWG Gammie could do the trick, so could the Carolina rig, which has the added advantage of a sliding bullet sinker and swivel!

So any ideas? Perhaps someone brave enough that tried this before?

LGF, both those rigs keep the lure on or near the ground. I think that most of the light artlure surf fishing (dropshot) wants the lure up in the water column.
Thats just my silly opinion, comments and bombs welcome.

Just a quick heads up to LGF and anyone else who like to save money... Baby bass coloured, and Silver salty Zoom super/baby flukes work brilliantly, Also watermelon red crawdads and speed craws, work well Smaller the better! I have tried the crawdads, and have caught snapper, rockcod, and even a grey grunter... food for thought!

Have any of you used the Berkly Squid, sand lice or shrimps?
I'm going to Manta da Barra over Christmas and was wondering if they could bring me some joy.
I also heard that you can inject some sardine oil into the hollow cavity in some of the lures to attract the fish... it just may work.

Tried the sand lice/sea lice ,plenty bites.small fish love it

missed this post for about a week i think, thanx for this info, i was saying since my initial question to blokes at work that i'm taking some (boss will have a mental breakdown if i take all) of my bass lures and just watch me get them saltwater creatures on freswater lures..........
