I was just wondering, next time when I go fish, will a catfish go for saltwater fish head and guts, or maybe some pilchards?

Hey braailegend

The pilchard thing has been done before, and yes I think they will go for anything bloody and gutsy, thats why a carp-head works so well, lots of oil and blood.

Post pics when you use them please.

I was thinking of using fishheads/stomach form stumps or other edibles, which i normaly through out. Must just find a nice spot for catfish in the W/cape area.

Sardines work for almost any predatory frshwater fish, some of my buddies have caught barbel and tigers on sards... Quite big ones as well!

I find my best times are pre and post spawn, september to mid october, and then from the begining of december again, when they done spawning, even though i have caught during spawing, so dont discard this time. (that was basically what ryan told me) seems to be spot on, ive caught barbel in april on artlure, basically was just lucky, ryan or marthin also confirmed that the colder months will produce more fish on an artlure,

Hs for baits my personal flavour favourite is a plattie with  two small j hooks, but im starting to move over to the circles as my hook up rate is increasing dramatically as i start getting used to them, day old chicks i dont like cause they just plain siff, and there crops pop open and the yellow nastys just kill me, a fish head especially a muddie head or grass carp are also great bait, i sometimes bind a piece of chicken liver to the head, like a combo throw bait lol, and that often provides a bite when its quite, and latley i been using small muddies whole with a cut gill plate, (kinda mixing up salt water and fresh water styles) and its working rather well ,

Havnt tried a slide yet with sucsess hahahaha, let me also mention i found fish base baits like heads and fillets produce more during spawning especially in deep waters were the fish that havnt started or have finished spawning hang out, you may incounter alot of fish on the side that are not even that skittish, but those babies are busy and are reluctant to eat,  so dont get to excited about it, but watch as its not often you see em spawing so intensly, (i saw it for the first time last friday, was amazing),

good luck and tight lines,
