Portable Fishfinder

Hi there

Do any one here use one of the portable types of fish finders that you use on a boat?  This is not the sort that you cast out, but you can use it on canoes, ski's boats etc. and is useful if you fish of a ski today and a duck tomorrow.

Are they any good/ worth the money. Have any-one tried the cheap models that you get these days (under R1000)?

Critter, the ones under R1000 (if you find any) are in my opinion, junk. Money wasted, ask Will101 on this site, he'll tell you. Pay a little more and go with a well known brand name, Garmin, Eagle etc.
As far as portable goes, you can honestly just get the fitted unit provided its small enough, and mount it on a block yourself and wire it to a small battery. If you still want the portable version, you pay quite a bit extra.
Look on killerdeals.co.za, their Garmin and Eagle portables are the cheapest you'll find and better quality than the other lot.

Hiya

If you have 2 boats and want to use a single fish-finder for both, there's an easier way. Buy which-ever fish-finder you like or that suits your needs. Now simply buy another transducer, power cable and mounting bracket. You can now mount the fittings to both boats and alternate the head unit!! Cheaper than buying 2 fish-finders!!
