Ponto Do Ouro

Hi Guys, i am going to Ponto Do Ouro in a couple of weeks, although i have been there several times to scuba dive, this is my first trip with the jetski.  can anyone assist with some info:

- where do i launch?

- do i need to get any permission before i launch?

- any ideas on good fishing spots

any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Ponta is a great place to start jetskifishing. You launch at the spot where all the dive boats are also operating from. Make sure you are there before they start offloading etc. They can sometimes block the entrance for long periods with their vehicles. Check the sand bank in the bay. It is changing all the time. I was there two weeks ago and there was a nice deep gully to run when it is spring low. I have previously found the sand bank so big that you have to come out close to the swim beach which can be dangerous as there is no more control on the bathing area.

You must obtain a fishing license and a boat permit from the Maritime guy. His office is opposite Coco Rico resort. Whatch out he is a pest.  Fishing license the last time was R65 and the vessel permit R150. Make sure you get the papers as he normally pockets the money. I have seen that he charged guys R450 for a vessel permit.

Fishing reefs are plentiful. Check on the website of Nomads Deepsea Fishingclub (google) the map of the reefs under the competition page they had at Ponta. We caught tuna at 40m right of the Ponta point with blue Halcos two weeks ago. Dorado was caught as well as Cuda  but it was scarce. Malangane has also excellent reefs but we have found them reasonably quiet the last few months. Pinnacles can also easily be reached by jetski +- 11 km. Make sure the weather is good.

thanks for the info, it will certainly come in handy.  i have t changed my dates, i will be in Ponto from the 20/12 to 28/12, not really looking forward to the big rush, but at least we'll be there.  i am going alone, are there a lot of jetski fisherman around in Ponto, i am not to keen on going out on my own.

is there a beach control, i have a 29Mhz radio, should i take it along?

Hi Imo

There is nil beach control. Be careful when you are in the bay area. The lifesavers that was previously working the beach and keeping control is gone. You will find bathers in the area where we normally beach. It has become dangerous but it is still better than at Malangane.

Take your radio with as there will definately be skiboat fisherman and jetski guys. I have two mates at the same time you going in December there. They know the area well and will assist you anytime. Gerrie normally hires the flat right at the launching beach. His number 0824470175. He will also help you with Coordinates for the reefs.

Lets hope for plenty fish this summer as weather is playing funny games.

My first time fishing of my ski was there. Awesome place. Met a guy at the border post as he was coming thru with his ski-boat. He gave us some co-ords of reefs. Was an enjoyable experience.

Went to fish of Malengaan. Saw lots of Fishing Ski's and trawled behind them. Got YF & Couta. Stayed on the beach 1 km north of launching site. Just beached the ski's there for the whole week.
