Pompano lures

Hi guys

I am going to Moz in July with my family (wife and 2 sons) and we are very excited about fishing art lures from the surf and ledges. Our enthusiasm has rubbed off on my wife and she is keen to fish with us.

Although we are novices my wife is acomplete novice (will have to teach her to cast a line before we go). I am taking an ultra light combo along for her to play with. 6' approx. 3/4 oz med/light action.

I need advice on what lures I should get for her to target Pompano. I know they can be hunted in the surf area. i also realise that it might be quiet during the winter months.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I moved it to the correct section.

Anyways, something small 3" or so with a bit of flash in if possible.

We used to catch plenty by just cutting a very thin sardine fillet and wrapping it around the hookshank, the skin on the outside, and just working it in back slowly.

Even a sibiki rig with a small sinker on the end works well.

But stick to dropshot or very small slim spoons.

These el cheapo paddle tails can work aswell

Just came back from Linene in Moz and we got a few on small Maria spoons and Onde Onde's. My suggestion would be to take one or two small Maria spoons in Green and Blue ( the second smallest and the next size up are my favourites in that order), small Blue Onde Ondes & take a few Iron Candy spoons ( all the colours work on their day but the pink, Lumo light yellow & Orange would be my first choice) Most smallish blue, green and silver spoons could work though.

As far as drop shot goes, 3/4 and 1oz jigheads and my lures would be the 4" and 5" Gulp in Pearl White, Pearl Watermelon and Chartreuse Shads and/or the McCarthy equivalents ( Local is lekker & cheaper!) and some guys have been having success in the McCarthy goldfish colour as well. The reason for the 5" is you have every chance too of picking up Greenspot Kingies,( I got a 5kg on Pearl watermelon last week), Blacktip Kingies and small GT's in the surf zone/shore break where you would be finding the Pompano.

A tip is you dont need to cast much beyond the first waves in the shore break, sometime they hit you in less than 2ft of water so retrieve the lure all the way to your feet.

All of the above on a fairly brisk retrieve.

Hope that helps a bit.
