Please, some advice on what outboards to select. Been running 75 Merc's - 2001. They are starting to play up and want to re-power, especially at the fuel price and distance we fish. 25 Mile reef for the day @ 140L @ R18.00/L.
Been shopping around for some prices and can get 2 new Suzuki DF70ATL @ R85,000.00 each, Yamaha F70 @ R92,000.00 each. Then looked at the E-Tecs and a new 60HP is over R100K (...WTF) Seen a pair of 2007 Suzuki 70's @ R60,000.00 each with 60Hrs on them. Back to the 2 strokes and then what motors or dig deep and go for 4 strokes??? Have added a pic of the boat. I'll appreciate any advice. Thanks Derek

Derek ive got 115 Suzuki 4 strokes on my Tomcat and they are excellent motors and fuel efficient. When I was at Inhassoro we would run to Paradise and back and use about 18lts per tank. Running to Baz Sandspit, then fishing all the reefs up to 25mile North and back to Inhassoro i'd use about 100ltrs. The Suzuki 70's might be ok if you are not going to do surf launching however if finances allow I would go with the Suzuki 90's excellent motors and will be lighter than my 115's.

Forgot to mention if I where you id definitely go with 4 strokes taking into account the distances you guys have to run as well as the fuel costs up there!

Thanks, 55L to Paradise and back at the moment. The Butt Cats is very light and weight on the back is important. Some guys run 60HP 2 strokes on the same boat. No surf, the boat is permanently @ Cashewbay Lodge. Look us up when you there next. Cheers Derek

Howzit Derek, I would definately have a look at the Suzuki 4 stroke range, they are great on economy and super reliable. That said so are the Yamahas but price wise the suzukis would be my choice.

Suzuki 4 stroke all the way, Yammies too expensive. Just bought a pair of 60's very impressive, just prop a 4 stroke correctly!!!!

Thanks, Suzuki's my choice at the moment.
Just been quoted half the price for a pair of 60 E-Tec's with 200Hrs. Like the motors on paper, fuel, power, weight and price make it attractive. But really worried about reliability. Lots of negative comment out there.

I have never owned etecs so cant comment on them from personnel experience however have heard of some guys that have had issues. Personnaly id stick with either Suzuki,yamaha & mercury 4 strokes. I did come past your place last time I was at inhassoro to come say hi however you guys where not there that day, got caught up with the holiday and did not come past again next time ill definatly make sure to meet up.

The dealer I bought my suzukis from has a whole lot of e-tecs laying around, He said all they good for is parts, lol.

I'm running a pair of 70 four stroke suzuki's (2008)on a 21/23' buttcat. Got them at 120 hours and am on 200 at the moment. Haven't had any problems, enough power for 4 okes plus fish. The newer model has 'lean burn tech' and would save more fuel (2009+).

Got an e-tec on a family boat after a bad case of glossy brochuritis - two major breakdowns in 50hrs....Eish!.

Why don't you consider the 80/100 HP Mercury?

Slightly bigger bore than the 115/140 Suzuki

Torque, and performance therefore will be the same

And they are 20kg's lighter

And you get a 5 year guarantee

Thanks so much to everyone for the input, I'm thinking Suzuki, Lots of them on the water at Inhassoro and will be best for support. Will give the E-tecs a miss. Now shopping for prices and any 70/90's later than 2009.

If Surf launching is not on the menu

my 1st pick would be 2x Suzi DF60AV bigfoot models same gearbox as 115

2nd Choice - 2x DF70's 21ft buttcats is weight sensitive in the arse and 70/90 4s can be a tad heavy.

e-tec there are some who love them and others that don't

my view is do it right once and get over it, there is also

local support for Suzuki in the area you will use it so almost a no brainer.
