Penn Powerspin V3000

Has anybody tried the Penn for dropshot? I am considering buying one to put on a 8ft medium rod with 14lb braid for rivers and as light tackle in the sea for Leery, Shad and Kob. It looks strong, is much cheeper than a Daiwa Exceller and only has 1 less bearing.

I don't have that one, but have this one, except for the wobble in the handle shaft (it's almost like there is too much play in the part that goes throught the reel) it's not a bad reel.
The pictured one is the Captiva CV6000, I paid about R 800 or something for it about a year ago. Nice smooth drag. More ballbearings than a rugby team (oh well close enough anyway).

I like the reel, but not as tough as my Exceller Plus.

Just check that it has a roller in the bail.

I know one of the Penn Spinning reels didn't have it, Stephen at commercial still showed me the reel beginning of this year, but  I can't remember while one it was.

It was about 300-400 for the reel.

Thanks, I'll ckeck on the bail roller as that is a must for braid. I do agree that the Exceller is strong and I'm the biggest of Daiwa fans, but I didn't think it was worth double the price(more than double for the plus). Penn is normally very strong but I've never used or worked on the spinning reels.

Thanks again.

The Captiva is a very very nice reel, and it has a very very smooth drag, overall the reel is very smooth.

Although it's a little bigger than the Exceller I still prefer the Exceller.

it puts me off when plastic is gold or silver plated, cause it's the first to come off, but that's cosmetic.

I once picked up one hell of a fight off the boat (about 500m from the side on a rocky stretch), fight lasted about 15 minutes and in that time the drag was TESTED. Reel did very well. In the end I lost the fight, that REEF was just too strong ...

Just as a matter of interest I have discovered from the Penn service agents that the Powerspin is not a genuine Penn. It originates through their relationship with Jarvis Walker. This also explains why it was not on the Penn website. It sound like spares could be a problem. I applaude the Penn agents who are honest and returned my email within 20min:first:clap12

I bought a Daiwa Regal 2500 5i, Suited my budget(R300) for dropshot, looks just like an Exceler, 5 bearings plus roller bearing, roller guide on bail arm, excellent drag with same force as the Exceller, spare aluminium spool etc. I used it this weekend and for the average guy who doesn't have R700 for a reel you won't find much better at this price.
Ps. The great service I got from the guys at Penn while looking will be rewarded.

My joy is short lived, all the light stuff was fine but when I cast an 11cm Rapala Magnun the reel has a terrible knock. The rotor assembly seems to have a lot of play in it. I'm waiting to see if the tackle dealer will send it away to be checked. I'll post the results!

Fluke,

I had one of those Penn's and for about four months I was highly impressed, rated it higher than my Abu's, Daiwa and so on for smoothness and just a nice solid feel.

The, bang, started slipping and basically just croaking. Chucked it, although with some disappointment, as it had really a nice feel to it.

I think the fact that Jarvis Walker features here might be relevant, as I had a similar thing happened with a top-end Jarvis Walker I had - BUT, in fairness, after it landed a 72 kg shark on 12 kg line and more than an hour's playing 'up and down'.

Cobus

I think in the end (after experimenting and actually wasting our money) we all end up back with the tried and tested gear...

I buy lots of different stuff, purely just to test and have to say most of the time they are nice for a few trips and then the problems start. In most cases I swear that I will never buy the "lesser brands" again and that I will stay with the tried and testeds, but as most of us know, I can't help myself ...

I still have my Penn Captiva but really don't use it that much, too much "nicer" stuff in the stable !!!!!

My most recent is a Shimano Stradic 8000, same size as the 6000 but has a little more capacity (deeper spool), now this one feels GREAT ! Will be part of my "use all the time" brigade.

And then ofcourse the Trini 30 is also on the way.

Just waiting for my .55 mono and the Berkley air ... wooooo hoooooooooooo

Neil,
I am looking at the 4000 Stradic instead of the 4000 Saragosa.
The prices are roughly the same but that the Stradic comes with a spare spool.

On paper I cant see anything that makes the Saragosa a superior reel to the Stradic. Of course there's always the Sustain!

What's your experience?

Boet, I have the Stradic, GREAT DAMN REEL, REALLY. They are strong, and can pull BIG FISH.

I prefer reels with spare spools ! On my one I loaded 30lb Fireline (black) and the other spool will get about 15lb Fireline (probably white). That cover me for bigger and smaller encounters ... I will use it both off the boat and also from the side, with the heavier going more for the bigger Cob, Leeries and YellowTail.

Have to say it feels better than my Exceller Plus, AND THAT MEANS ALOT, you know how much I love my Exceller Plus. But then again, it's about double the price aswell.

And I just love the "power" handle on it ! I hate those small handcramps giving handles.

Thanks.
Just waiting for the Speedmasters to arrive and will then make a final decision on the reel.

It will then be spooled with the 10lb McCoy and we'll see how it works.
