Maybe not relevant to this but, I have a penn 555 that had a very slow spool straight out of the box.No matter what I did I just could not get it any faster.. till the other day when servicing it I tried tightening the frame bolts in increments (like torquing a cylinder heads bolts).The spool is now superfast, my only conclusion is that the plastic frame was distorting due to uneven tightening.

in my opinion it is a tolerance issue, if you throw it softly it doesn't vibrate, as soon as you give it some horns it cavitates, Barry Whareham showed me years ago how to balance a spool using knot sense on the spool but this didn't help either? the knot sense would sort out your line lay issues but it was still rough, will never be in the same league as a trini 20 or even a Daiwa Grandwave 40 for that matter.

the frames are made of aluminium, you will have to pull really hard to pull the frame from the real seat. It is possible that there is too much lateral movement of the spool - it is not properly centered. Some do have shims below the leftside spool bearing to center the spool, is this not possibly the problem and not the spool being unbalanced?
