iv used my Penn Fathom 40 since I started shark fishing about 2 years ago, havnt had problems until this year, the Fathom had 2 dog gears which is really nice but 1 will keep jumping out after replacing it and it seems to jump out every time iv loosen the drag after im done using it and then when I tighten it, I can hear it jump out and then im stuck fishing for the rest of the session with 1 dog gear. Any idea on how to fix this???

I'm beginning to agree with psy, not that Daiwa has ever let me down either!! But every other brand I've tried seems to hit a hiccup sooner or later.

You know what I'll say, let me look at it, your surfblaster hasn't played up since I sorted it.......

Every reel has it`s faults but the fathom has it`s own from out the box.

Wanted the 40 for edble`s but changed my mind

I have replaced both the anti reverse pawls on my Fathom 30 and that was only after a few outings. I must admit I did kick the clutch in too quickly a couple of times, the reel does cast a mile after all, but I handle it no differently than I do compared to my Toriums which are now going on for 5 years of service.
The difference is I got Keith to do the Torium modifications, replaced the original pawl with a modified one.

I like the Fathom, the problem is it isn't a Shimano.

Get a reel designed to do what you are doing with it.

The reel you are using for sharks was never designed or intended for that type of fishing.

If you want to keep fishing shark with it then buy a heap of Dog Pawls and replace them every time you service the reel of buy a Torque or a Saltiga LD or a MArquessa or a Talica.

The Trini 30A is designed for fishing hard but even it isn't really designed for what you would be doing with it but even so it has big Gears, double dogs and oversized Carbontex drag washers.

PLease either send in a pic , or Explain exactly what starts to happen , as i am currently using this fish in League events to gain a bit of extra Mileage out of my sinker .

I'd pitch it against 90 % of The bags we happen to hook in a League, and apart from The Wading aspect , i don't find the reel too bad . The Arm to disengage the Pawl is my only gripe- i find the release is not smooth as my saltiga .

Got my Fathom back from Keith near the end of last year, originally sent in for a service, waited about a year for the pawls to arrive.
Started using the reel this week for spinning, smooth drag, casts a mile, feels good.

I phoned Keith now and asked him if he could fashion a pawl for this reel and he reckons he can, so next winter when I send my reels in for service he may put in a modified pawl. He stated that he is waiting for parts for other Penn reels and those customers are doing their nut as they belong to commercial tuna catchers.

i CANT FATHOM what this thread is really about.

Shimano don't have this problem once the little spring is fitted behind the hondjie paw

Stu make sure that clutch lever is screwed tight. One of the 30's I have was doing the same and I figured out eventually that it could be the problem. Took right hand side plate off, tightened it and now it is sorted.
