Hi gents

I was given our old IBM server , loaded win7 on it , excellent home pc but for anything else useless.

I want to use its hardware to build up a "new" pc.

I have :

Intel xeon 2.13ghz quadcore cpu
2gb ram ddr2 (4x 512)
Geforce gts250 1gb graphics card
2x 250gb hdd
2x 450w power supplies

I know I should probably replace ram with maybe 4gb ddr3 ?

My Q :

What motherboard should I get that will be compatible with wat I have ?? Mostly with the Xeon cpu.

Thx in advance

I just need to clarify a couple things before I jump right in here. Do all of these parts come out of the IBM server? Was that Xeon running in a motherboard that was using those DDR2 RAM modules?

I know oom. Jis but with the new addition to the family its even more though. And not even to talk about work. I've been running our receiving alone now for the past 2mnths. 6-18hrs for me. What does sand feel like between the toes haha.

Jip j-bay, everything comes out of the server. Except the graphix card. That was my "bonus" for a neat storeroom lol.

I did some research and saw that a 774 motherboard (something like that) might do

Getting a new LGA775 motherboard now won't be easy since that socket was discontinued some time ago. Since the motherboard and CPU already work together it would probably be best to keep them together.

Regarding your RAM you can't put DDR3 into it since it uses DDR2. They aren't compatible and the modules just won't fit at all. You could look at getting some 2GB DDR2 modules and putting those in, just to have a bit more RAM. It would be a good idea to check for a model number on the board and then look at the manufacturers website to make sure how much RAM it supports first though.

As long as your motherboard as the right PCI-E 16x slot then that graphics card should work fine in it. If it was me, I would look at using it as a nice file server. With a bigger hard disk you could use it to store all your photo's, movies and music, and free up space on your other computers by dumping all that stuff on your fancy file server.

I have no use for the server. That's why I want a new motherboard. It can go up to 32gb ram. It doesn't have pci-e 16 , only x1 and x8

My advice would be to create a thread like this on the Carbonite.co.za website. I am on there and it's a great website where guys buy and sell second hand computer components. I have managed to get scarce motherboards by placing wanted adverts.

There are also very clever guys on there that can advise you Ram etc.
Good luck
