Over the last year or so we have been trying our hand at some freshwater fishing. I know of a few venues closeby some more productive than others. Then we found this little gem of a dam - no entry fee - neat and tidy - and for now it is packed with fish...

I say "for now' because unfortunately there were a couple of locals who removed at least 6 nice sized carp from the dam while we were there. One can only assume that they will continue to do so until there are none left.

So sad - unfortunately we had kids with us - we have discussed going back there to help them understand that what they are doing is wrong. I can be very persuasive when I want to.

Carp and barbel breed like rabbits, the only way you will empty that dam is to use nets.

Alwyn - they might "breed like rabbits", i'm not an expert in this matter. That however is besides the point. Who wants to fish a dam where there are no more bigger fish???
Catch and release ensures that 4-5kg fish become 8-10kg fish. Now that's the kind of dam I want to fish in.

Its been that way for at least the 12 years I have fished that dam. There are also some decent bass. I have had a 9kg carp and 2,5kg bass from there, biggest I know of was close to 15kgs. Nice spot for the kids.

Then you need to remove/eat all the carp under 3.5kg and release all the bigger ones. If you release all the small carp back then they will not get to very large size.

However if you then have people eating the bigger carp 5kg+ you will be back to square one.

I would say make the best of it while it is there.
