Ou Kapenaar terug innie Kaap.

Hi guys,

Born in Goodwood (many moons ago) I travelled our country for almost 20 years, working and living in such obscure places as Postmasburg, Standerton, Lime Acres, Stilfontein, etc.

So at last I'm back in the Cape where I belong, and has taken surf fishing up about two months ago. Yes I've done some dam and river fishing while inland, but the surf-gogga has bitten me now. Especially since I've caught two sand sharks, a cray fish(not size), a crab(which became bait), a 45cm Kob and a 3kg Gallie, in only two months fishing.

I use a pawn-shop bought rod (don't know the name) and a "nameless" coffe-grinder. I know buggerall about baits and leads and what-nots, but have joined here to learn from you guys.

Thanks for having me.

In preparation of a Namibian fishing vacation that never realised I acquired three Penn reels, but was never shown how to cast with them. My father-in-law would've taken me and Jr to Henties and Paaltjies and all the legendary fishing spots along the namibian coast, but unfortunately passed away prior to our trip.

Needless to say the vacation was cancelled and alas I still cannot cast with a penn reel. Jr on the otherhand can cast with the penn as if he's been doing it his entire life!!!! How? I dunno!! He's just a complete natural ... probably.

I stick to my nameless coffee-grinder and just enjoy being close to nature and close to the sea.

Ok, so I'm rambling now ... I'll shut up ... for now.

Thx Boet. Any tips on where to cast to get some decent bites? I've done Kreeftebaai, Melkbos, Yzerftn, Macasser and Swartklip, and only hooked at Swartklip and Yzerftn.

Lots of bites but no hooks other than those already mentioned. i'm still learning when to "kap" and when not to.

Would love to catch something at Kreeftbaai or Melkbos, but EISH!!! die wind hy waai hom dood!!!

Waiting for the Kaapse Dokter, to do his thing this week and hopefully get something over the coming weekend at Melkbos.

Galjoen season is just around the corner,so your wish might just come true,as for tips I think your best bet this side at the moment is ganzekraal, although I'm still hoping the kob will make an appearence here in Melkbos. As for kapping, I find it's better to wait a bit longer for the fish to take the bait properly, then just lift the rod and set the hook gently. This does not apply to stumpies, with them you must move the bait around and kap lightly if you feel them tapping away at it.

Thanks rofflign. Once I read your comment I immediately realised my mistake. I strike too hard. As in; I strike like one would strike with karp or tiervis. Waaaaay too hard.

I'll make a few gooie at Melkbos and Ganzekraal this weekend. What time of day would be best? early morning or late afternoon? Some guys tells me low tide is best, and others swear by high tide, although personally the "between low and high tide" theory makes more sense to me.

Which time of the day do Melkbos fish prefer?

BTW, since you are from Melkbos: is Koos the only shop that sells bait such as white mussle in Melkbos? And where do you get bait on a Sunday?

A good friend and fishing buddy of mine lives in melkbos, so I tend to gooi there quite often, and as it happened we realised one sunday morning that we forgot to buy bait the previous day and where stuck because Koos is closed on sundays.

Ok foods sometimes has pilchard/harders, but the quality is not that good rather call Andre at niteowl in Pentz drive tableview.
- kabeljoubank at ganzekraal you can fish in a moderate sea, I like to go when the tide starts to push and then fish through till when it starts dropping again, otherwise you have to swim to get on the island, best time is early in the morning.
- In melkbos you can catch kob (when they’re here) throughout the day as long as there’s colour in the water and the temp remains constant . At bontkop, holbaai, derdesteen, kreeftebaai and haakgat you can catch kob throughout the night but then the nw must have been blowing for a day or so. During the day you will still get kob at bontkop and holbaai, but at the other spots the water will be to clear. If the SE starts to blow again the colour comes back at kreeftebaai but if it blows longer than a day or so the water becomes cold. The only place you will get kob then will be at the slipway or in the vlei.
- Just a warning, fishing at night you can run into poachers and other undesirables that frequent the area, so I would advise sticking to the slipway.

Sorry ek antwoord nou eers: I lived in Postmasburg between 1981 and 1993. In those years the "dam" in Danielskuil actually had some water and very nice fish. But I havent been around there for at least 7 years now, and do not know if the "dam" actually still exists. Between 1997 and 2006, when I lived and worked in Lime Acres if you wanted to fish in the Nortehrn Cape you had to make a weekend of it and travel to Spitskop dam or Bloemhofdam. Douglas was a good place to gooi for river fish and then off course Barkley west along the Vaal.
