Hi
I'm a newbie on this forum and have some questions.
I live in Upington so fishing is done at the Orange river.
I love fishing and only did the usual old methods of a hook with "kerriepap" or bread but very interested in trying the newer methods in attempt for bigger fish.
Now this weekend we did the overnight thing. I really really want to catch a big baber to have something with a bit of fight. So after some reading and asking around it was decided on a dead dove.In attempt to get it even more smelly I even injected it with raw egg. Hanged it outside in the sun and after day 3 I thought it would start walking around again, omw the smell
So to the regular place, private ground but there is people that fish there beside us but again no daily traffic.
So got the stinker in the water, was in for the whole night and not even one bite! I was so dissapointed.
Throughout the night, not even one fish. Used scented corn (banana, honey, Almond), bread, boilies, earthworms. Everything. And no fish. Next morning a small "onderbek" and miniature barbel, like 10cm.
Then we went to some rapids, I used a rubber fake lure, again nothing.
Then some corn and again 2 small baber.
So whats up? Weather? Day a usual boiling Upington weather. Night was a bit cooler, kinda cold the next morning for half an hour and then back to a scortcher 39 degrees. Wind during the night about 20km/h and West. An older guy said that's the problem, when the wind is West then the fish won't bite. Any truth in this?
2 Weeks ago also fishing with West wind, also almost nothing.
Fake lures in rapids - Does this work in the Orange river with it's dark muddy water? I used a green jelly worm and the green jelly lizard look alike and no bite. Can the fish even see the lure? Must you use more vibrant color lures?
Someone also mentioned air pressure, it must be low for fish to bite, any truth in this?
It's bad to sit and wait for hours and no bite and every once in a while you see a big carp jumping out the water. I also now changed to use boilie rigs and not the usual bait direct on the hook in attempt to catch at least bigger fish and not the small stuff as usual.
So anyone have some ideas or tips for the Orange River.
*Only highlight.. After trying for hours with the fake lure I tried a earthworm close to the reeds, caught a very small kurper. Being desperate, hooked through its back, and threw back in, sat for 20 minutes. Then something "takes" the bait and starts swimming away slowly, I gently add some tension and start reeling in, then letting go a bit so very slowly, could feel something big-ish.. Bought it closer and it must have been 2 or 3 meters from me suddenly it just dropped the bait
I'm thinking that this could have been a bigger barber? But yeah that was the highlight
