optimal depth for carp ?

i hope this does seem to be a stoopid question the reason i am asking is that as a laatjie when we went fishing the first thing the old man used to do was to take the canoe measure a certain amount of meters(for the marker cant remember how much) and row until he found the depth he wanted.

since i have rowed the equivalent of 5 duzi's with two screeching center-pins in the background i vowed never do the rowing thing again

so does it matter if u fishing 2/5/10/15 meters ?

and if so what is your optimal depth that u fish at ?

There isnt really a clear answer but in my own fishing over the last few years, 5m is a good avg. depth to fish... but I never put all my rods at one depth, and would always have a "shallow" rod or two as well, normally in about 1-2m of water, depending on what the dam is like... At some Vaal dam resorts the water gets deep very slowly, meaning you'll only get 5m of water at maybe 200m out! But other dams will have steep drop=offs from the bank, so 20m out its already 5m! ....

Best is to put out rods to cover different depths, and see which produces best, then move the other rods to the same depth/area....

Definitely so as larger carp will be in the 4-6m in daylight hours as the sunlight levels are lower 9filtered0 and the thermoclynes keep the water at a constant temperature making it a lot more comfortable for the larger cold blooded fish.

As with madCarper, on sessions i'll fish different depths but in the Vaal if you want to constantly catch fish in the 5kg+ class you want to fish 5-6m in depth and that's more often than not long row.

Looking for really big carp in a dame like Tzaneen or Doringdraai you would be looking from 10-14m

I think its pure trial and error, depth/water flow/temp/ wind, they all play a roll, to single out one aspect is hard, because they are basically all dependant on each other. the depth will depend on temp/ water flow/ and wind.
Just my opinion though, I wish i had all the answers.....:fst::fst:

From 2' of water to 60' of water. It all depends on the venue and the mood of the fish. I have never come across a certain depth that will work all the time. As enigma said 10-14m in DD and Fanie but on our last session at DD the biggest came out in 2' of water at mid day. Rather go MadCarpers route and look for the fish. And remember to follow the fish over long sessions. You might get them in 2'todau and two days from now they will be in 24'. Only certainties in life are death and taxes.
