Octopus as bait

If the leg is rather thick it is better to slice it half way through ( length wise) and then put onto the hook--lets say inside out.
I have used Occy leg on select occasions but has come up empty. Do you keep the suctions on or remove all the skin? Also do one need to soften the bait with a mallet? What is the easiest method of removing the skin. Any suggestions will help Thanks guys.

sand works the best like simen said , one thing i do is wen the water is clean i remove the suckers , if water has nice colour i leave the suckers .
One thing ,i can add in Estuaries i dont remove them at all , have dont lots of experiments with and witout , and the ones with the suckers on won hands down everytime !

I couldn't do it.
I caught one in Mtwalume and my then fishing partner made me keep it.
When we got home we started gutting the fish, the Octopus was still alive etc and was checking me with that "Eye".
I never had the heart so I took him/her back to the beach and released it.
I'm sure that oke tells everyone I'm soft.
