We had our monthly club comp at Nooigedact (Close to Carolina Mpumalanga) on Saturday.
What started out as a very wet week we were in for a tough time.
Saturday Dawned on us windy and overcast. Nooitgedacht is normally excellent for Carp and we normally have no problem in catching them here.
We started off the morning on the dam wall in hopes of getting nice yellows but this was not to be our day. After 2 days we decided to go in search of Bass. This did not take me long and I managed to get onto the pattern very quickly pulling 4 bass in no time - Marno still did not have one on the boat. We decided to head back to the dam wall again in search of yellows. I decided I was going to try 5lb line and trap stick for bass. As I cast the lure out I got smashed and broken off by a dogg. Marno was next and even though fishing with 10lb it looked like his rod was going to break he too got smashed up.
A few mins later I managed to pick up a bigger bass that gave me a hard time but came eventually to the net weighing in just over a Kilo.
Then it was time for our group lunch break. Most of the guys has Bass and 4 of them yellows caught on crank baits and spinners. We went back to the dam wall with spinners and cranks and although we had action we had no connection. We passedc another one of our boats who had a fly rod out. Now last year I got a good yellow on Dry fly and this is what I tied on. Now imagine we are at the dam wall and the wnd is belting. I cast out the fly and am busy trying to fix the tangle at my feet we there is an almighty rise on my fly and I miss it. So this carries on we get rise after rise and no connection. Eventually I am again busy fixing a tangle and I have loose line all over the water I see the rise and I "Pull a Van der Merwe Strike" of note beacuse of all the slack line and make connection and this is how I landed the biggest yellow for the comp.
MArno followed suit but it was just not his day. We decided that instead of going to look for other species we were just going to fish for yellows and that is all we did.
So three guys weighed 3 species (on the same boat) and the rest of us weighed 2.
So friday and Saturday night we stayed with one of our club members who has a house in Belfast and Access to a very nice trout Syndicate.
We went here on Sunday morning and SUnday was not my day but it sure was marno's. It took us a while to find out the pattern but when we did Marno caught like 7 trout and a whole herd of bass. I too caught a few rats and mice - it was fun though...
