Diving alone!
This is quite a struggle for me sometimes... and I KNOW that I am not alone.
When I started out a little over a year ago, I was totally infatuated with the sport. I dived at every opportunity I had (and didn't have). Finding buddies to dive with proved to be very difficult because I mainly dived during the week. I have dived on my own in the shallow 2-3m deep kelp beds in Cape Point a few times on my own. Like most things, the more I did it, the easier it became...etc...
However, I also had an increasing awareness that if something were to happen... who would know?
And this is what has bothered me without end. The spearing media has also portrayed an image of an intrepid adventurer going boldly where no one has gone before... Pushing the limits and diving in untouched waters. But, in all fairness, this is a generalisation and not the encouraged practice of the respective individuals and brands.
This is where the rubber meets the road: You've had a look. The conditions are awesome. No one to dive with! What to do? I'll leave that for you to answer for yourself.
I believe in dive buddies! If at ALL possible Please dive with someone! I have learned that it is an awesome thing knowing that you are not alone in that hostile environment! Diving with someone helps me to relax in the water and the knock on effect of this is immeasurable!
What I have done in the past, when doing a solo dive, is something similar to checking out with Penguin or Scarborough when going out into the deep. I have called a mate telling him where I am diving, when I am getting in what time I plan on getting out. Once I'm out, I call them again to let them know I'm all safe.
Safe diving,
L
