Newbie needs help

Hey guys
I'm brand new to fishing, and live in the Bellville area. I want to get into some carp fishing. The Majik forest and Doordekraal dams are the closest to me. Could you guys please give me some advice on what tackle I should be using From reel to hook, everything. Where would be the cheapest place to get good tackle? I am just starting out and would like to get a feel for fishing before spending copious amounts of cash. Any help would be amazing

Is fishing permitted at Majik / Magic dam? Is it safe?

I mountain bike there often and almost always see a couple of guys there. As far as I know it is not exactly legal but there never seems to be a problem.
