My eight year old grandson has taken an interest in fishing and has received a rod named, Storm BWS 200. Problem is I know nothing of fishing and seek guidance to assist him. We live close to Zandvlei, Cape Town. Someone please advise what bait he can use to catch something. So far we have tried corn [mealies] to no avail?

Hi, I'm no expert at all, but I go on the od occasion to rutter Rd by zandvlei and caught my biggest fish to date on that spot.A 7kilo carp. What u can do is buy premade carp traces by Eddle gas,pot of plain floaties and two dips. One called Bango and the other called fx.Had my biggest success at any dam I fished with with that combo. And never forget your feed. I buy a 1.2kg packet of super cast. Mix as per packet and put it on pre made trace and form your mielie bomb. Start with that don't buy 1000 rands of stuff and be carefull of sales man filling your trolley with what they feel works start small and work your way up. Don't feel despondent about not catching with mielies. I went days at that place with a lot of gear and didn't catch anything except sunburn and a cold. What u do is you tie your ready made carp trace to your main line put one plain floatie on one hook and a koo mielie on the other. U can try one dip at time on your mielie bomb and if that doest work do a drop of both. Or one drop on the bomb and one drop of the other flavour on the floatie.Don't over do it with the dip on mielie bomb. a drop no bigger than a 20c coin on top of the ball where your mainline runs through the ball,if u put two dips on do a line on the one side. Go to the top canal accessing from m5/most north marina entrance, find your way to the canal that past you feeds into the vlei, a brak canal with houses will be on your south. Chuck a handful of mielies against the far side of the canal away from you (north side), rig your line with a van der merve hook, nothing else, no sinkers, swivels etc.. Put as many mielie kernels as you can fit on the hook and cast it against the opposite side into the same place you threw the corn earlier. Leave your drag loose so a fish can pick you up and run with no resistance and wait.
Shouldn't take too long. We used to have serious compos with buckets of KFC at stake and used to rack up serious numbers of big carp and I saw my old fishing mate recently and he says the carp are still there, fat and plentiful as ever. In those days you could put a livie out on the south side of where you sit and we had a few double ups with big carp on one rod and leerie on the other and guys running up and down the little arm of land and folks watching the madness curiously from their lawns, dogs barking from across the way..Good times.
