Hi guys,
I fish carp in the UK so that I can catch something until I can fish abroad for bigger species.
I did a lot of fishing in Thailand where methods similar to the mielie bomb are very popular. Because of this I fish a method feeder a lot.
Method feeders/mielie bombs don't seem to be that popular with the UK carp anglers. Match fishermen use them a lot for smaller species but here it's mainly boilies for carp. This probably helps match fishermen who must catch as many kgs of fish in a given amount of time as possible. Boilies lock in their attraction staying on the hook a long time, often too big for the smaller so called nuisance species. The feeder creates a cloud and bed of bait bringing in fish quickly, but probably a lot of smaller fish first.
Personally I think boilies are used because the biggest profits are in selling them. The top anglers on TV and in Magazines are sponsored by the tackle companies selling them so they picture themselves catching big carp on boilies. Readers imitate the mags, other anglers copy each other and share ideas. It spreads like wild fire.
I still often use a single boilie myself as the actual hook bait. I will use bread, corn or maggots.
Boilies don't come off as easily as bread. Corn/maize, bread and maggots are often eaten by the smaller fish.
So I want to ask do you guys find boilies more productive than mielie bombs or vice versa? Maybe you find quicker bites on mielies but often by smaller fish?
I'd like to ask the opinion here rather than in the UK as the mielie is used by more people here so I feel I'll get more opinions based on first hand experience.
On a side note I have tried making my own glugs, dips, goos to increase the instant attration of both boilies and mielie bombs. Do you guys feel these can make a big difference?
Often a home made dip here can be gylcerin/glycerol with a dye and a flavour like vanilla, banana etc
