hi guys

 

going to mapelane for the first time in my life from 8th - 13th aug. any extra info will help. im looking at targeting ineds and some Garrick if they are around. i already have a decent setup for the toothy critters any sugestions on what tackle to buy for the edds?

hi, since you havent had a response let me be the 1st to help you.
There is no specific answer to Mapelane. it depends on the conditions.
The time you are going there is possibly going to be good for Grunter. i say possibly as they can be elusive. So look up on the forums how to target them. You should get some Shad in the mornings and evening in the bay in front. and then swimming them for the Toothy monsters is fun. There are a couple of good spots, and you can try them. Crayfish point is damn good during the day, and is worth a look at.
At night just look for a nice spot for Kob, and hope for the best.
The Mouth / Lagoon can be really good fun on light tackle, and if you like fishing the night through you can pick up some nice big Kob as well.
I recommend you take a really good quality Chokka as it is deadly. If you got a cast net try get some mullett too, as that is 1st choice imo for good size Kob.
Dont be scared to cast a dead mullet out either. i have caught plenty there with that.
When the Wind Blows the Lagoon (estuary) is youre safest bet. 1 word of Advice is keep away from the waters edge as the flatdogs have taken people and kids. I wont let my boys go near the water there. If youre FIT take a walk South during the day and get to the ledges. These can be really good for ANYTHING.

hi Flatdog thanks alot for the info.we are going to do most of our fishing with artificials (spoons,poppers etc) and a lilbit of bait fishing.obviously the first size shad will get a 10/0 through the lip for those big toothy guys swiming around.cant wait to get there already .will post a report first thing when im back

im no expert on Artlure angling except for spoons and plugs. But ive seen the guys do well at Crayfish points targetting smaller species. Hopefully conditions work for you.

Hi Just got back from a weekend at Mapelane, sea was up so could not fish the ledges, shad were wild in the bay friday afternoon, mostly small (all on spoons and artificials) Swam a live shad and had a garrick pick up unfortunatly the knot pulled.The wash was also bad going from south to north. Saturday morning 3 shad came out then eastly came through, Saturday afternoon in the easterly a few shad came out, some of our gang ventured south to crayfish bay and found the shad trapped in the trough they were wild and size. Sunday morning the bay was quite although the sea had settled, crayfish bay produced again and the Garrick were seen in the waves (no one took swim rods). Hope you have better weather and the sea is settled, you will find the fish, heard there are grunter around. Take it easy on the tar / dirt road as there are some serious potholes and bumps. Take plenty drinking water (or beer) as the water there is brak and smells and undrinkable.

Deon sounds good to me boet.i will be arriving on sunday just after lunch (if all goes to plan) and gonna hit the water first thing.ill be in the light silver blue KIA Sorento. CLS thanks for all the info,i also heard that the grunter are around but ill be targeting mostly ineds and garick,but if that fails ill try my luck with the grunters.

Grunters can get over 5KG so its worth a look (in the surf), and a fresh Grunter on the Coals is hard to beat. They are good fun on some fly tackle if you can entice them. But you will mainly get small ones in the estuary. Hope the Garrick are full up for you.

ignore the water the monkeys are pain in the ass ,by the camp and  baboons about 1 km from cray fish point

Mapelane is an awesome destination, monkeys and baboons are only mild deterrents...
If you do want to target eds, get some redbait, anf fish it with a tiny running ball sinker to the right of the big dune on the way to crayfish bay. Ledges are deadly, if you can get some live shad and keep them alive, swimming one there will get you seriously stuck into something large, blacktips, and the like.
We have pulled some large raggies from the bay on just on size shad too....

Im planning a trip there for september/october, if anyone is around that time just look for the row of oztents... pull in for a beer and a chat

hey guys.just got back from mapelane on friday,was there the whole week.the weather didnt play along unfortunately.the SE was blowing at a rate of knots.we still fished hard.with no results, i had every bait imaginable out there with no success.on monday night we had a bit of fun on spoons with a few shad coming out,my buddy got a queen fish of 54cm and i got two GT's of around 600g.and that is it.i got back to jozi on friday.on saturday the guys that stayed behind braved the walk to the ledges and were rewarded with a 4kg brusher and two 2kg rockcods on dropshot (will post pics when i get them from trevor) Deon it was nice meeting you bro too bad we didnt get a chance to get stretched on a raggie or two,but maybe next time.
