Want some advice on braid for dropshot outfit and the knots to use.

I have a Sensation passion stick with Shimano 5000 reel spooled with Berkley fireline. Can't remember the exact breaking strain but think it is 30lb. When I bought the line this was the hoohaa line, but I have found it rather disappointing. The fireline constantly cuts into the monofilament/fluoro leader. Either when a big fish hits the lure hard, or when you do a big cast. I now use 50lb fluoro leader, and the fireline still cuts it. I make n bimini twist in the braid, then tie the leader on with an albright knot.

Is there better knot options? Is this a constant problem with the fireline?

Should I consider another type of braid?

(I am heading to the Congo soon and woukld like to take this rod with, but I do not want to loose a big Goliath tiger as a result of this.)

Dankie

Google search the Bob Sands knot. In my opinion you don't need any other braid to fluro knot.

I would just check the first few meters of braid after prolonged use.

I'm no expert, but i've been told by a few "in the know" and fishing for tiger with braid is apprently not advised. This is due to the zero stretch in the braid and the verocity of the tiger's take. It normally doesn't end well for angler (i stand under correction)

agree with stefan on the bob sands, especially on the heavier stuff.

Lighter tackle the albright works just fine for me. But I think you're tying it differently to what I do.
I do it as shown in the picture attached, where the thinner line on the left is the braid and the mono is folded double.

Goodluck with the tigers!

Jacques, Fireline is still by far the best "braid" on the market. Yes more expensive, but the quality speaks for itself.

2 very important things you have to remember about braid (any braid)
1) It has ZERO stretch
2) When fishing with this reduce your power.

OK let me explain.

With mono lines you have at least 10% stretch in the line. When you strike the line acts as a shock absorber and the direct power exerted by you is broken down through the length of the line until it reaches the hook. That is why you sometimes see guys strike 2 or 3 times with mono to set the hook.

With braid it means if you move your rod tip 1m your hook also moves 1m (ok there is a small amount of stretch in the leader).

Now with this hard strike (same as mono) something has to happen.

You either pull the hook, break the line, break the leader etc.

To counter this, do not strike so hard, fish a looser drag.(reduce power)

Try the following: tie say 30m of mono to your rod tip and go and hold the end of the line in your hand. let someone else hold the rod in a horizontal position. Let him lift the rod to the upright position and feel the strain on the line.

Do the same then with braid and also feel the difference.

Yes their are better knots than others, but remember a bad knot tied well is better than a good knot tied bad. Stick to what you are comfortable with.

Hiya Jacques,

Look no further than the Bob Sands knot to tie your braid to any thickness mono leader.

I fish braid on my grinder drops shot rods as well as my multipliers. I have braid on my TN14, GrandWave20, TOR16 and cast full length leaders.

The Bob Sands knot is by far the best, I use it joining 7lb braid to a 0.30mm mono leader. For 17lb braid to 0.40mm mono leader. For 20lb Braid to 0.50 mono leader. All this on my spinning and drop shot gear.

On my surf and scratching setups I join 50lb braid to 0.50mm mono leaders and 80lb braid to 0.70mm mono leaders.

If I snag up scratching in the bricks or get stuck on scattered reef on the beach the leader line ALWAYS pops before the knot or braid.

I have test them all and the Bob Sands is by far the best for my liking.

Try it you will not be disappointed.

I've been using the FG knot since finding this easy way to tie it on youtube. Used to use the Bob Sands Knot previously. Takes a bit of practise but best knot I have used whether joining light braid and mono or heavy braid and thick shock leaders. Even used it to join my new flyline to braid backing last night and worked like a charm. Best bit is its a 100% knot, doesn't cut your mono/flouro and there is no knot in the mono so this thing sails thru guides.

Thanks manne

Simen I find it interesting that you rate the fireline that good. The line I have is a fused type line, looks almost like moer thick tooth floss. Not like typicsl braid (on the back of a fly reel for example).

Can I use the same knots for this line as for other typical braids?

Fireline is a fused dyneema fibre and not woven like a normal, 4, 6, 8 strand braid

And yes you can use the same knot or as any of the other posts recommended

I just read ( http://www.sportfishingmag.com/techniques/sport-fishing-knot-challenge) that the improved fg knot is the strongest. I can't quite figure out from the steps on the page how to tie it...

But what I do find interesting is that a Bristol knot (never heard of it before) is quite good, and very easy to tie! It is basically the same as I have always been doing (bimini and allbright) but instead of wrapping the braid around the leader, the leader is wrapped around the braid.

This should in my mind eliminate the fact that the braid cuts in to the leader, although I think the know will be a bit bulkier. Will test it on the weekend.

I'll practice a few gt's and fg's. (Still not sure what the difference is?)

I must say that this is the knot to go for!!! I recently learned this knot from a mate(poenie). It takes practice but it is such a strong knot and so thin that I will never use any other knot to tie a leader to braid again... And they hold as I have put them through the test with a few CPT yellow tail...

I will also make this knot on all my heavy jigging gear for tuna.

((goodp_

I must say the Bob sands is a really easy knot to tie.

I have always been under the impression that you have to have a bimini
(and a 50 + turn one) in the braid in order for it to have a bit more strecth.

Am I correct in saying the Bob sands and GT is pretty much the same knot, except the GT has a double line in the braid (aro Bimini)?

Also the GT knot is exactly the same as a slim beauty (knot)...

HELLO All

Thanks for sharing, lately have been using the FG knot and with prictice its become easier and also noticed its quite thin and strong.I was using 18lb braid JDP[4 & 8 weave.

I have now bought myself Gosen casting braid 25lb. I use 35lb floro for my leader.
Would appreciate now that want to use Gosen braid what knot will be dthe best.considering the Gosen braid ias very thin and looks delicate.

The Fg is for me the winner. Keeps max strength, casts the best, takes a bit more time but its worth it. PR knot even better, but it takes time, effort and a bobbin.

For light stuff up to 50 lb leaders I use a slim beauty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi4BE-vNqPE very similar to the bob sands knot.
