This must be one of my best fishing dams in SA
About 20 years ago nature conservation introduced 5000 bass and they have been growing every since
You need to work quite hard for bass still and a boat is still the best.
The dam has a good carp population but that has never been an interest for me.
The bream fishing in summer months is quite amazing. As a kid I remember the fish going on feeding frenzies where all you needed to do was drop a clean hook into the water.
There is also very good barbel and silver barbel fishing from the steps at the aventura resort.
The are also quite a few other species in the dam, paper mouth, ghielemientjies, dwarf tigers, vlie curper, red breasted curper, blue curper, three spotted, mirror carp, canary curper, Eel but are extremely rare and should be placed back into the dam,
The old road offers good spots for yellow, bass, barbel and carp.
The best place for me to fish at loskop at skeeperskloof, and die hell. but a boat is needed here.
The biggest issue with the dam is the pollution, even though the fish seem to recover its still sad to see what has become of this water. You would think as South Africans we would take more care of our one limited resource
The mines upstream run directly into the river and at times Die Hell is know to bubble due to acidity with scores of fishes dying.
As it stands its still a great dam to fish and the aventura resort is a great place to take the family. The area has a great game reserve and I have seen leopard and spoor on a few occasions.
I do most of my fishing in the river now below the dam wall, for yellow fish on Fly and spinner. The last time i was up I caught a 5KG yellow that fought me for over half and hour on the fly. That same weekend I caught a 7kg carp but that had nothing on the yellow on fly.
Depending on your stype Lospok has it all. I would suggest feeding spots if you are going the pap gooi option and I still think the best fishing spot by the aventura is at the steps below the main pool
Enjoy
