What hook is best to use for leeri fishing using mullet for live bait.  what is the best setup for the livebait on light tackle?

Hi vannie. For rigging live mullets, I use Lions' Magic Round 5/0. They are light and extra sharp. Only bad thing about them is that when you pull really hard, you bend the hook open. I have seen a 76kg raggie caught on it thou. Yust play the fish nice and easy when its a big one.

I use a 5/0 Gamakatsu circle hook and hook the mullet between the head and first dorsal fin. These hooks are sharp and strong enough to handle the leeries. They are thin which makes it ideal for live bait as it does not do too much damage to the bait fish.

hey jdereuck, there two places that ive catch leeries here in cpt, 1stly on the reefs in strand ive caught, the guys from tuckers tackle took me out there with them. best time early morning prefereably the water must have some character. then at zandvlei in muizenburg, i wouldnt recommend you keep any zandvlei fish..they taste terrible and the waters polluted, but out in strand they are bigger meaner!!
anybody else have some insight as to the best condistions to catch them?

I know we have all heard it before. Guys please release the leeries in sandvlei as this is a very sensative area. Have been catching leeries there for years and hope to keep catching there for years.

For garrick circle hooks are best, but if the shad are killing my livebaits without a hookup i change to barbless J's so i can at least catch a shad(small mouth's)
