Kite fishing

I know I know it's a dumb question... but I've looked at various topics and I still don't know what it is. Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong topics but I would really like to know...

Is it similar to kite surfing or more similar to sending your bait out to deeper water with a kite like a bait boat?

I know it's a silly question but please humor me.

You get a big kite you fly out to sea - from the beach of course. Below the kite is a line and your bait hangs from it.

When the fish bites you can lift it out of the water by pulling the kite up - if the fish is too small you just let it down into the water and wait for a bigger one to eat the one you have on. Repeat the process and once you get the size you were looking for you can reel it in.

That was the 'humor' you asked for.

Kite fishing is different in that you don't cast the sinker and or bait or slide the bait. You use a kite to fly out over the water hence dragging the sinker / bait out to the distance you want. For instance if you go for a nice size shark and you have a 2kg piece of bait you may not be able to cast it that far. I only get around 30m with such a bait.

The kite drags the bait through the surf and once it's around where you think it should be you drop it. The kite is retreived and you wait for the action.

The second method is to keep the kite attached to the bait, when the kite drops the fish took the bait. When the kite hits the water it gets destroyed of course. However with the price of kites it is more economical to drop the bait and retreive the kite.

Anyone try using one of those little RC helicopters to "drop off" their bait. I would imagine that it's a combination of kite fishing and bait boat... What do you guys think?

I would like to try kite fishing but on the beach. I found all of the equipment but the only problem is the kite. For any experienced kite fisherman on the beach, what do you recommend I use?

i've thought about this alot(beside the insane awesomeness of it) it might have the advanatge of being usable on the rocks...from what i understand of bait boats thats not possible.

dont know waht kinda loads those rc copters can carry

Sorry at R12K for a RC bait boat...anyone who buys that has rocks in his head!
Go onto gumtree and get yourself a 3-4m ark fishduck with 15hp motor(No need for survey or skippers)...I promise you will spend less than R12k, and you will catch way more fish!

Sorry, Not sure who DSM is...
Ark is just a brand that makes small inflatables. But you can find a reasonable soft bottom rubberduck for anything between R1000 to R5000 on Gumtree, and a good second hand motor for around R5000-6000.

There are guys here in the cape who have big ski boats, but still do 90% of their fishing with this setup, because it's so cheap and easy to do. You don't need a crew, you don't need launch fees, skippers licences, boat surveys, the petrol costs are minimal. You are allowed to go out 1000m off shore, which is more than you are going to get with a kite or a RC Boat! And if you think about the added advantage of being able to use a fishfinder, versus randomly dropping your bait, and hoping it's near fish. It's just a no brainer, the way I see it.
