Just a few pics to show you can make your own SP moulds from resin.Mostly soft plastics with a flat side can be copied but there are some exceptions like the senko worm and the prawns. If like me you go through thousands of soft plastics a year making your own will save some bucks but you can then also make them in the colours that work day and night. For the price of about 2 packets of soft plastic a kg of plastisol will make you hundreds of lures depending on the size of course and in no time at all have enough lures for a fishing session.

Got it from a company that repairs boats eviltoy but have some moulds made from surfboard stuff and had no issues with heat from the plastisol. If the mould is to thin is does bow slightly tho.

where do u get the plastic to make the worms. Im keen on making a mudprawn imitation.

this is the plan, Get a big mudprawn, freeze it into position and then made a silicone mold of it, and from that work with a demo till im ready to make a resin mold

Thoughts and tips would be appreciated.

Good stuff there Steve. Do you experiment with any of you own patterns?

Yes I do and make some lures to suit my needs. Most of my lures are copies or modified copies in some way or form.If we bought SP only I would be broke.20 odd mutilated lures is not uncommon. In the pic below only 3 of those are as is from the packet, some from scratch, some have borrowed bits.

Might be a challenge to copy a prawn, need a good seal onto the base of your mould, the prawn will defrost when the resin sets(heat) etc.My 2c is you dont need a direct copy of any baitfish or prawn. What you do need is a similiar shape, the colour they prefer at the time, some current or a moving lure in the day,at night pretty much the same minus the current.Presentation is key,by that I mean weight.Minimal weight gets a SP to be as realistic as possible.
A weightless SP LIKE THE ONE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PIC is deadly.

I wonder if you will get the plastic into the leg cavities and if you do, they may be so scrawny and fragile? Mud prawns have 8 legs (I think) each will need to have a breather? Also it's going to be a very intricate mould since it needs to split down the middle of every part.

Would be interesting.

Good stuff !! Maybe I missed it but where does one get the plastic to pour into the mold? Do you make it or order it ready-made? m- and according to what I understand one can melt and re-use old ones?

Thanks for the interesting post

Ya BJ,

I also foresee some problems. Was thinking of maybe spraying it with a resin compound first to make it a bit harder. I dont think legs are the biggest issue and have to be spot on. As long as it has the right shape and sits in the water nicely i think its going to work. Also the legs of a mudprawn are quite thick and hard, so there will be something there to mold.
