Hi guys,

I need some finer details as to what bait to use and where to fish at Jozini dam.

I have booked at Nkonkoni camp(22April - 27 April) and will be taking my own boat down.

I have never fished at Jozini and was told that Nkonkoni camp is geat and If you take your own boat you ar sure to catch something?

What is the best bait to take? Spinner,crank etc?

Is it worth trawling?

We will not be fly fishing so please advice me on the normal fishing gear and bait?

Can you fish tiger on braided line? How do I tie the wire to the braid?

Hey Jman....

Dont bother to much with spinners and cranks etc.. if you wanna catch a boat load of fish.. find a nice bay.. anchor in such a way you can fish its mouth and also shallower into the bay.. Chum with a bit of sardine.. wait 5 mins then toss out sard on a decent size hook .. NO SINKER.. let it slowly sink and hold on to your rod.. if it gets to the bottom you will get barbel.. there are millions there..

use a very fine trace - like piano wire and connect it using haywire twists. dont bother fishing the gorge to much rather fish in the main body of water but watch out for the wind!! big wave.. oh yeah and watch out for crocs, they very shy there but there non the less...we had one stalk us last time.. scary stuff

Spent this last weekend at Jozini. Water very dirty from rains. Fished the Eastern Shore which seemed clearer than the river side. Most boats seemed to prefer the same.
Caught all our fish on sardine floated on about a two meter trace in three to four meters of water.
This was my first trip Tiger fishing and I can confirm the story that you miss more than you catch!
What seemed to work was small ( 1.0 ) ultra sharp hooks. piano wire attached to main line with a small swivel.
I fished with braid, but mates fished nylon. The trick seems to be to give the fish a chance to eat ( dont rush )as you know with braid being so direct, it is difficult not to reaction strike as the bite is very strong ( similar to Shad/Elf )
We had a great weekend, although it was extremely hot ( 40+degrees )
A Beach Umbrella on the boat was a stroke of genius as well as a well stocked cooler box with plenty of Tea and Scones!
The wildlife is amazing - Take a camera!

Below is the trace that we use at Jozini. We fished the shoreline that leads to the gorge. Concentrated on water between 1.5m to 3.5m. We tried to drift along the shoreline as the movement of the bait was the key to our success. If we did anchor, we would cast our baits, then retrieve them very slowly.

The tackle that I used: a 7 foot dropshot rod, Shimano Slade 2500 loaded with 4lb Fireline, attached a fluoro leader and ending with 8kg Sevalon on a Daiichi 3/0 bass hook. The bass hook keeps the cut bait nice straight and one can cotton nicely just at the eye of the bait thus keeping the bait nice and natural. Split shot and red glow bead is optional.

Bait: Tilapia(not neccessarily alive), sardine and chicken breast. the baits cut no longer and bigger than an adults wedding finger.
