Drifting could well work but with complications that you mentioned,unless you have a fairly clean bottom,I would suggest that you use either an oval or round sliding-sinker at a distance from your hook that you feel comfortable with.Bear in mind how it work on your popper-trace where the fish followed your popper's sound and then went for the fillet,remember.Same principle here ,sinker bounces,draws attention and cat will follow .
My way, which is obviously not religion,is to rather rely on instincts to locate them ,by paying attention to likely places that you may find them,such as structure ,reeds rocks etc. and then the easiest, to physically look for swirls on the surface which occurs mostly early morning and late afternoon.Those would also then be the best time to target them on art-lures,depending on the type of lure a cast in the general direction,either to the side or just over the swirl could elicit a strike.
