ALERT: Cholera now in Vaal River
Received via email:
Do not drink water from the taps... we have just found out that the Vaal
river which supplies most of JHB with water has been infected with Cholera.
The municipalities are keeping it quiet for now as they are not certain
themselves (thats government for you) but rather be safe than sorry. So
please do not drink the water.
If the rumours are correct then Sasol has already sent a warning out to its
employees...
NVDL: According to the report below they are referring to the lower Vaal,
and they do say treated water is safe. But I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Laboratory tests on water samples in various sections of the Vaal river
revealed traces of cholera, the Northern Cape health department said today.
Shelley Fielding, the department spokesperson, said the traces were found
"specifically at Barkly West, Spitskop, Schmidtsdrift, the Vaalharts weir in
Warrenton and the Vaalharts canal system".
However, treated water is safe for all purposes as tests on this were
negative for cholera. "Environmental conditions are thus favourable for
cholera and other waterborne diseases and the public is alerted not to drink
any untreated or raw surface water from any source," the department said in
a statement.
Fielding said people living along the lower Vaal river system should also
not swim in the rivers, ponds and canals, fish in them or use them for water
sports. All raw water must be made clean and safe before using it for
household tasks and bathing.
