I was fishing in my small aluminium boat one evening at a place called Westernport Bay here in Victoria,Australia.I had a couple of lines out for gummy shark (smooth hound) and I hooked up on what felt like a nice fish.After a few minutes I seemed to be winning and the fish was coming toward me.Then it felt like I'd lost the fish but there was still a bit of weight on the line which was confusing.I wound my line in and imagine my surprise when I saw a fish about 40cm long on the end.

Thing is,the fish was in fact a carcass that looked like it had been a snook or a barracouta.The head was missing,cleanly cut off and the fish had been gutted.The skin was all but gone which made indentification harder and there was no tail.

I reckon it had been a fish that someone had caught and lost overboard while cleaning it.It had then been snapped up by a shark,I'd hooked the shark & while I'd been playing the shark it regurgitated the carcass which caught on one of my 2 hooks and dehooked the bloody shark!!

The shark hadn't been hooked deep as my trace wasn't really frayed so it must've been just hooked in the mouth.

TRUE story!

Howzit.  It would seem that the one that got away, didnt actually get away.

Its the strange things like that which make fishing such an exciting sport.

I have seen this before too! Hooked what I think was a rockod, and ended up with a half digested sardine/mackerel on my hook. I think they swallow the bait whole, all the way to the stomach. Getting stuck on the bait already there, the hook doesn't set when pulled out.


Another great true story was told to me by Bennie's mate Fin - in the Eastern Cape  during a comp they caught a yellowfin tuna, and while fighting the yellowfin it got converted when it was swallowed whole by a marlin.

The marlin was landed, and according to the rules the weight included the weight of the marlin + the weight of the tuna stuck in its throat.
