I want to know what drop do you guys use when casting far or near? Cause sometimes when I cast my tip of the rod whipps a bit. I just want to know whether a long drop will give you a better tip action. Just curious to know.

When throwing sinker (8oz) for sliding I use about 1.5meter drop and when casting with my spinning rod(12ft)about a meter. don't ask me why, it just works for me.

for me a longer drop gives me a smoother cast about half the length of my rod. when wading i shorten it a little. your casting style also affects the drop length. when you cast overhead, you will use a shorter drop. casting from the side, use a longer drop. pendulam style casting can accomadate a very long drop.

For Surf fishing off a beach, with OTG (Off the Ground) or Pendulum style casts, a long drop gives better distance and control - also helps to load your rod ... I would say at least 3/4 the length of your rod is the drop to use.

I do not see how it is possible to utilise your rod to the max with a shorter drop :?...

With a shorter drop you will not really be casting to the full potential of your tackle. To get distance, you must build up the power smoothly and deliberately with the sinker travelling over quite an arc to build up the necessary force and momentum - this can only be accomplished with a long drop (and body movement).

A short drop is OK for an overhead "thump" or "snap" cast, but do not expect much in the way of distance ...

If your'e casting well with a short drop, you'll probably be amazed at yourself when you change to a longer drop !

A longer drop will also allow the rod blank to load properly and to unleash the power of the cast properly and smoothly and may help to curb or cure an "unruly" or "whippy" tip at the end of a cast ...

After having spoken to a few people regarding this, especially regarding loading of HMG blanks, it seems the longer the drop, the better the blank will load and the further your cast will be (casting style dependant of course).
As BigBass said, this is generally limited to OTG/Pendulum style casts, as the rod's arc can be used properly to load the blank and send the sinker.

When casting plugs etc I generally use a shorter drop and overhead cast, obviously distance is an issue but with the plug generally being light, its hard to get it much further anyway. I also find this method a little more accurate than the OTG style of cast.

Thats exactly my point. It is possible to cast 9oz weights with something like a posseidon5 (or is that poo-seidon5).
Just take a long (3/4 rod length) drop and a OTG cast.

Because an OTG cast loads the rod better and more gradually, you can get away with heavier weights
