I have been offered a new Garmin 521s for R7200 fitted. This is without the bluewater card. Does anyone know these units? Is it worth the price or is there a cheaper alternative?

hi there if got the 421s the screen is just smaller than the 521s,very nice units,i am also upgrading soon too the 521s

Please help me understand if it would be better to fit something fixed like a Garmin 521 onto the boat or something that can be used in more than one application like the Nuvi 500.

Both can be equipped with marine charts and besides the smaller screen on the Nuvi I am tempted cause it can also be used in the vehicle.

There is a huge misunderstanding re the marin e charting on the Nuvi. If you would like a brillaint marine plotter with the ability to double up as a Road pilot, the Garmin 620 is as good as it get. If you ould like info and pricing, please mail me at deon@seaport.co.za

I thought the NUVI 500 used the same maps as the Garmin 620 ?

I just happened to see the 500 being offered "on special" at R2800 and the maps at R1500. Thought it was a good deal.

Maybe not ?

Also seen the Garmin 152 fixed GPS at less than R2000 but it's advertised as a "demo" unit.

Edit: Nope, sorry just had another look the 152 is a "used" GPS

The nuvi 500 is a nice cross over unit, but it is not strictly made for marine use.The nuvi does not do the 3d view. The nuvi takes less routes and waypoints. The nuvi also has a very small screen 3.5", but it is up to you. , I would personally not go to sea with only a nuvi.
