I am hoping someone can clarify this for me.

I can't seem to find any evidance that legislation has been passed that an EPIRB is compulsory on a Cat A or B vessel.

Has this bill been passed and if so, when must we have them by?

Thanks
Bennie

Hi Bennie

Read the  SAMSA "Marine Notice 20 of 2008" I cannot open the file on my machine at home.
Also note that there is a change wrt the transmitting frequency on EPIRP.

Info availible on the SAMSA site.

Thanks Seabiscuit.
Read it.

"Marine Notice No. 20 of 2008
Performance standards for marine radio equipment required by the Merchant Shipping (Radio Installations) Regulations, 2002"

It doesn't state that you legally have to have one.

Hi Benniejordaan

We had a whole big thing down here in the Cape about a year ago, where it was flying around that one would need them for CatB.

You DO NOT need them on Category B vessels. I remember going to http://www.africanangler.com/ and then onto the SADSAA link and it is in there somewhere. The Cat A boats HAVE TO have them. They published the "law" in one of the skiboat magazines too under the SADSAA news and views column too.

I must say I think if you running long runs far out in hectic misty areas, it is not a bad idea.

Cheers

Thanks HT.
That is my imporession too! A whole bunch of guys are under the impression that cat B needs one and that there is a dead line to get one. But as far as I can see, there is only talk about possibly imposing it. The only info I can find regarding a "deadline" is the discontinuation of the old 128 Meg system and implementation of the 406meg.

Thanks again
B

Hiya

It was passed in 2006, that Cat A and Cat B vessels must have an EPIRB.

How-ever, SAMSA has offered an exemption for Cat B vessels UNDER 25ton. Read Marine Notice No.6 of 2006 This exemption was vaild until July 2007, i haven't heard anything since then, and SAMSA surveys my commercial boat and they have not indicated that i need one, so it seems as if the exemption is still applied.
