Howzit I am new to the forum. Been a few years since I last fished. Grew up fishing Illovo river and along the coast between Doonside and Park Rennie. Fished on light tackle and bait for black tail and the like. I want to get back into fishing and dropshot appeals to me. I plan on fishing dropshot and some small spoons and rapalas along the coast in gullies and around the rocks. This is the setup I have in mind: Rod - Shimano Convergance 6,6 or 7 foot medium heavy. Reel - Shimano Exage FD either the 2500 or the 4000. Line - Double X viper braid either 10 or 15lb. What do you think? Jigheads I imagine I would use a 1/8 and 1/4 mostly. I would like a setup where I can still feel a nice fight from smaller fish

I would look for a light 8' rod, possibily the Convergence.
Exage in the 4000 size will be a perfect.
Have not used Viper braid, so cannot comment on its quality.

Thanks so an 8 foot rod in medium heavy with a fast tip? That was just some stuff I was looking at online. Will go see what my local store has this week. Budget of about a grand for the rod and 1300 or so for the reel. Any braid you would suggest?

Sufix 832 in 10lb or 15lb (actual is 20lb and 25lb)

Sufix Performance Pro 8 in 21lb

Tough as nails: Fireline Crystal in 8lb (actual is 17lb) could look at the 10lb but its pretty stiff for a light action stick and distance will suffer.

Also consider Spiderwire Ultracast Invisibraid in 8 or 10lb (actual 17 and 25lb)
I bought some of the above for my son as it was cheap as chips (I think stores can't move it so was old stock) I was so impressed I went out and bought myself a spool.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but by actual do you mean the equivalent of what the braid would be in mono? I have never used braid before. From what I have read i should wind a bit of mono onto my reel then join the braid to the mono? What size mono should I use for 10lb braid.

Not stupid at all.
Braid labels and ratings are generally misleading.
Typical examples:

Sufix 832 10lb
Packaging states a dia of 0.20mm and BS of 10lb
Actual dia is around 0.24mm and an actual breaking strain of around 25lb

Sufix 832 20lb
Packaging states a dia of 0.22mm and BS of 20lb
Actual dia is around 0.30mm and an actual breaking strain of around 40lb

Fireline Crystal 8lb
Packaging states a dia of 0.18mm and BS of 8lb
Actual dia is around 0.23mm and an actual breaking strain of around 22lb

Fireline Crystal 14lb
Packaging states a dia of 0.23mm and BS of 14lb
Actual dia is around 0.30mm and an actual breaking strain of around 40lb

Just to confuse matters, Sufix' Performance Pro 8 labels are accurate.

Given that you are new to braid / PE lines I would suggest the Fireline, it will be easier to handle and other than the lack of memory behaves more like mono.

The 8lb Fireline will be perfect.
Some of the newer stock is marked in kg, not lb, if this is what you find go for the 7kg version, its the same line as the 8lb..

Thanks! Will go for some 8lb fireline and line my reel with a few rows of mono first? Then double uni knot to the braid

Ok so I went to my local tackle shop today. Ended up getting a Daiwa Laguna 7,6 foot rod (762HFS) and a Laguna 4000 reel. They spooled on the braid for me. Went with 30lb gator braid from triple fish. It was very thin braid and was what they said would work best. Got some 1/2 oz jigheads with the shad head and 3/8 oz with ball heads. Have ordered some smaller ones as they didn't have any. Got a kingfisher anchovy 11g spoon and a iron candy spoon thats bright pink. Apparently the Kingies are smashing this particular spoon and they can't keep enough in stock. Also got some worms in red and also green they didn't have the berkley soft plastics but I will order some camo worms. Got some pearl white shads in 6 inch and a green and gold in 6 inch and paddle tail 6 inch in white. Went with what the locals are catching on

Not yet but haven't had much cahnce to fish only been on 2 sessions. Had 2 of my plastics bitten in half. I just got an 11 foot laguna rod that I am now using my 4000 reel on for bigger plugs/spoons. And I got a Shimano Exage FD 2500 with 12lb Gosen braid for the 7.6 foot laguna rod. The 4000 was a bit big for the shorter rod
