How to match floaties with Muti

Thanks for the reply Big Truck

This carp thing has become so technical. I think I must just co back to the basics, Purchase a Mincer, soak the milie pitte the night before, add two kilos to a pot with two cups sugar. Boil until softish to the touch, put it through the mincer.... Ground bait done. Pop into the local store purchase a can of sweetcorn. No mutis or Boldips.... Plain simple and effective.

We have made these carp so selective as to what they feed on and perhaps even confused ourselves into what to present to them. It sure keeps us experimenting and thinking.

Lol I wanna try some mussel bait for them. Not sure we have any type of freshwater shell fish in our dams?????

Evening ladies and gents.

Do yourself a favour and have a look at the vast amounts of different dips available in store, with new ones launched almost daily. Now I believe we can all agree that every dip on the shelf must have caught at leist one fish. However certain products do produce better results, which I believe is attributable to the individuals who produce these products.

Now to get back to the point. How to know what to use.... I will be sounding arrogant now, but it is the truth:

A good bait in the wrong spot will not catch a fish where a poor bait in a good spot will produce a bite.

The moral of the story?

Bait placement, like JCVD said is key.

To put it into perspective:

For the last 18 months I have been fishing the vaaldam, vaal river, Grootdraai dam, bloemhof dam, trichardtsfonteindam and a bunch of smaller private/commercial venues. During this period i have made use of 8 dips.... just 8.... as a rule I fish SWD. End of story. Very seldom will you find me using a float. But thats my angling style.

The crux of freshwater angling is fresh feed (mixed little but often, fresh at the water), the correct distance, and most of all confidence. Confidence to the extent of knowing you WILL get a bite on the cast. When I make a cast I know that I will get a bite in 20 minutes, not because I am arrogant, but because I have confidence in what I am doing.

Hi Dewalds

Is that SWD the "soet wit degie"?

Just to make sure on what you said..... You don't use any floatie, but only the SWD applied to the hook?

Hi Cobia,

Yes, it is indeed sweet white dough, made with Semolina, simply because it keeps its tecture better during the course of the day.

Generally I would use just the dough as a hookbait yes. The only occasions where I would use a float would be when there is grasscarps present at the venue, and feeding actively, as well as when the fishing is slow. I would use a float under difficult conditions just to see whether it would make a difference.

Then of course in the event where I participate in a league or SA or simmilar and a float is a part of the teams plan, and is determined as a "must" I would make use of a float.

I have noticed that semonela has a firmer texture than ordinary flower. I have also not been applying dough baits to the bait presentations and the only reason is because I seem to have this negative frame of mind towards it and the reason being that I always wonder if it has come off during the cast. I think its time my mindset changes. Also struggling with the confidence of using the mushroom sinker baitbol presentation because I have had failures casting them. This weekend however I am going to dedicate one out of my 4 setups to a mushroom, sliding rietvlei rig and only degie on the hooks.... I will stick to the 2 to 1 ratio for the ground feed mix.

Thanks for the advice. Always keen to learn.

Something that I picked up from Barend Breedt ( Super Cast Pro Angler)

He had Recently fished at one of the Venues that I have been fishing at for a Couple of Years R50 dam in Alberton.

And I happened to Run into him at one of the Tackle Shops and I asked him why he had baited and presented in the Way he did.

He used a Hard Plain White Float on one Hook and 2 Soft Floats on the Other Hook)

He said that he noticed that there was Grass, weeds on the Bottom and he Wanted his Bait to Present Above that.

So Another Factor you need to take into Account is what type of Bottom you are fishing on.

Now if i Reel in and I see weeds on my Hooks, I will Change from Bottom Baits (Mielies,SWD,BAcking ) to Floaties.

Sometimes i think it does come down to luck and finding the right presentation/combo.

Fished a club comp this last weekend and didn't do very well, only managed to land 9 fish over a 28 hour session lost about 5 in hook pulls and about 10 runs that ended in nothing, the guy that won landed +-50 fish. We sat about 200m apart but due to where we were siting at opposite ends of a bay our baits couldn't have been landing more than 20m apart, we even teased him about him poaching in our feeding spot.

The previous comp I did very well and come 2nd with 40 fish, and tried the same tactics with one rod fishing close with worms and brommer floaties, this time didn't catch a single fish on that combo. When i ask him what he used after the 1st weigh in he said quattro, tried that and managed 2 quick fish and then the bite when quiet even though he continued to get a bite every 30min or so.
My fishing partner was catching on blutrain mellie pips i tried and nothing even though we were fishing right next to each other and we have gotten so good that we can land our baits with in a few meters of each other. he finished on 15 fish.

Over all i like to start as plain as simple,
rod 1
top hook plain yellow float with swd backing
Bottom hook plain white float
Nothing on the bomb

rod 2
top hook plain red float with swd backing
Bottom hook worms and swd or plain float.
One strong and one sweet dip ie garlic/FX

from there you can start making little changes until you find the right comb.

but also remember that a combo will be hot for a while and then it can go quiet.
