How to catch what in the run - question

Just read all the sard talk - boy would I love to catch something more than shad or sharks! - keen to hear from anybody who is a keen shore spooner or drop shoter - I do bait under duress - but then also open to conversion.

keen to learn about:

a)  places
b) tactics

During the sardine run you catch fish on whole, fresh sardine. The simple fact is that nothing else is likely to work - the fish are in sard mode and that's all they want. The only artificial lure that I have had any success with during the run is a Halco or Rapala that looks like a sardine, but then only when you can't get fresh sardines.

The jig and drop that Raggieman referred to is simple and effective. You have to literally be on a shoal of sards for it to work. The idea is that you make a trace with a one or two trebles spaced quite far apart and a sinker at the bottom. Cast your trace into the sards and jig until you feel that you have hooked one or two sards on the trebles. Then let your now baited trace drop down. Very often a gamefish that is feeding under the shoal will go for your trace. A lot of cuda are caught during the run each year using this method.

The jig and drop trace described is fair, but I would shy away from 2 trebles on a trace simpyly because it would be tough as hell if you managed to hook up with two stream trains at the same time and in a shoal that is very likely. I would go with 1 hook!

Howzit Johnjc, i would recommend you getting your hands on the May and June editions of the ESA magazine, cos they have 2 really good articles dedicated to the Sardine Run, and how to and what to do... It has helped me alot, from traces/rigs, to hotspots, and target fish... So if u can get those 2 editions it will make really interesting and informative reading...
