Hi While diving last weekend at the point with

Hi

While diving last weekend at the point with ledge; i finally found a fish after hunting for the last two hours. I swam down, took aim and pulled the trigger only to find that my spear went straight through the fish but did not stop because the connecting line had broken.

Anyway as much as we looked we could not find the spear or the wounded fish (hottentot), but i did notice a few small sharks lurking around so i suppose the fish did not go to complete waste.

So, my problem is now that i cannot find a new spear. It is an old 100cm arbalete champion that has been converted into a 80cm. I was at Cristy Sports the other day and i found out that the free diver spears do not work for my gun.

Is there an arbalete champion dealer around? Could i get a new spear made? Or should i cut my losts and buy a new gun?

Louis Hattingh of Rabitech will machine a new spear for you - much cheaper than buying a new gun.  Although if you have the cash, you could do worse than replacing your old gun :)

I am giving my age away.

Depending how old the handle is, there are two trigger release sizes.

The very old one is longer, but the newer ones are the same size as all the other spears and the normal rob allen or rabitech spear should fit it.

Have a look inside the release and if it is a very narrow mechanism then it is very old.

The new ones have a broader mechanism.

Hi MOGGY

You are definitely showing your age! The one trigger has a plastic coating and the one is solid metal. The trigger components aren't interchangeable unless you grind down the parts on the side.

If you read Piet Van Rooyen's book you quickly notice the type of hard work that the old Cavalero Champion could do.

Hi

I have a Cavalero Champion spear and gun here..very old but still in working condition. No rubber. If you want it, it's yours.

Cheers

I actually use to modify them to fit and I still have some working ones.

The release mechanism was later made of chrome plated brass and was a lot wider than the others. The plastic tipped trigger was the second last generation and the latest ones had a moulded chrome plated brass trigger. I have a brand new one at home, never seen the sea.

Tommy and Attie Louw were all using Beuchat handles and I bought two, but I could never come right with them.

I used to make my own muzzles and they still work.

These were the days, before Rob allen and rabitech and you had to improvise.

I still have 7mm SS spear blanks, which Tommy brought in from the states and I still make my own spears.

Ihould take some pictures and post them.

Hi Moggy

Please post some photos of your muzzles and modifications.

Gun tinkering is a lost art!
