Yes but I've had few bite throughs with even large elf with a big long shank with 100lb flouro leader..and everything else gets hooked also so..? That said I'll fish a wire trace if they are around and a have a few premade ready always..

That trace may have helped me yesterday when I lost a def PB shad off small surf! Bit through my 0.80mm mono trace half way in!! It was a good fish!! :-(
Myself and DL switched to steel, but you know those big shad don't like wire?
I will tie a few up myself and test them out.

Guys you might think I'm crazy but for those big shad that don't like wire traces, try the following..... The new lollypop/sucker sticks you get are made of plastic and are also hollow, with enough diameter or appeture to fit roughly .6 mono through it. Sticks are about 8cm long and have used them to successfully catch large elf . Kob don't mind it either . Try it out .

I normally clip off the both ends of the ear buds and they work perfect as well. I thread the steel wire through the ear bud.

Exactly...when bus elf are around don't mess around, bury that wire in a whole pillie.

I've noticed the big guys aren't fussy with regards to wire, you just have to be there when they are around or be getting the bait to them, past or under the smaller ones that are making up most of the shoal. My biggest shad have been on spoon, with wire clip nogal..Also make the bait a whole big pilchard with the hook buried but tip showing for bigger ones as opposed to proud hook for the smaller ones.. There were smaller guys around last night, I released one that had been eye hooked before and was blind on one side, what a survivor! So I chummed the little guys close, and threw a big whole pillie as far behind them as I could and before my sinker hit the bottom I had a 2kg on that gave a much bigger fight that I would have guessed for his size. Shame, that fish was pissed off. I let it take the bait well and swim away and struck the sunken hook deep and then again, worked for me..
Come to think of it, I hooked a large pajama shark that I could feel was a shark immediately on the pick-up and I didn't set the hook purposely. When it was close and I was pulling it up over the ledge the fish got released by itself and I just chucked the bait out again and got a small shad which also went back and then chummed, rebaited and put out behind for the bigger guy. Ja so to bring it back to topic..
A good strategy would be fish a mono bite trace if you think the elf might be around while targeting others, land one hopefully if they are or arrive and then change to wire trace to be sure. If the bigger boys then arrive use a big hook, wire trace and bury it deep in a whole pillie leaving the tip protruding and gooi it deeper and wait for the bigger one to take the whole thing kla and swim away before setting any hooks.
